Hindi Medium vs. Half Girlfriend more like Content vs. Bollywood Masala

It is not often that a well-made film wins the box office race and mostly sighted as ‘good for class but not for mass.’ But this year, that equation seems to have changed or at least made an exception.

Half Girlfriend , directed by Mohit Suri was made on a handsome budget and with star value of Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. And since it is written by Chetan Bhagat, whose previous films were super hits, the film had higher promotional value and was expected to be successful with masses and critic. Although, its critics' review said otherwise.

Another film was Hindi Medium , starring Irrfan Khan and Saba Qamar in lead, was made as a comical satire on current classism in the educational system. With a good message, it was expected to earn average business. But the picture changed when the magic of Half Girlfriend started to fading away, whereas Hindi Medium despite being in third week, is still going strong. And since Hindi medium received all positive response from masses, its popularity would sure cash-in on Bollywood.

To the figures, Hindi Medium earned 25.21 Cr in Week 1 followed by 20.88 Cr in the week 2. Thus, its total collection stands to 46.09 Cr. It is expected to cross 50 Cr mark by Week 3. Though on paper Half Girlfriend might have earned more than Hindi Medium but considering its response from the masses it’ll go negative on box office soon. Figures have 49.19 Cr in the first week followed by 9.52 Cr in the second week. Thus, making a total lifetime collection of 58.71 Cr at the box office!

The result is clear, strong content can also win over Bollywood masala films!
