One-line Review: A gripping story, great actors and spectacular action sequences - Neeraj Pandey's 'Baby' has it all! Positive points: Intriguing Plot, Neeraj Pandey's Direction, Fantastic Action Sequences, Noteworthy Performances, Applauding Dialogues, Striking Cinematography Negative points: None! Plot: Terror attack of 26/11 gives birth to an undercover operation Baby to uproot terrorism from India. Initially it starts with the team of 12 secret agents, however only four survive till the last mission. The story starts in Istanbul where an undercover agent named Rakesh is brutally murdered by a group of terrorists, after his Indian companion Jamal cheats on him. However, this blood game turns upside down after a dare-devil officer Ajay (Akshay Kumar) seizes Jamal and grasps vital information from him that Maulana Mohammed Rehman (Rasheed Naz) from Pakistan is planning for a big terror attack in India. This short yet significant note sets the 'Baby' team in action to crack Maulana's evil plan, before it creates turmoil on Indian soil. Direction and other technical aspects: Director Neeraj Pandey is the hero of this film, who has excellently presented the fictionalized plot adapted from some real-life incidences. His style of story-telling is unique in its own ways, which keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout the film. Dialogues like "Iss saal bahut saari Diwali hai. Kab tak rok sakoge?", "Main religion category mein Indian likhta hoon, Capital mein!" and many more, actually received the applause. This act declares that 'Baby' is out an out blockbuster hit right on its first day, first show. Plus, the cinematography by Sudeep Chatterjee speaks the volumes through the visuals. Performances: Neeraj Pandey has extracted finest performances from the spectacular cast of 'Baby'. To start with the lead actor Akshay Kumar- he rightly fits into the role an undercover agent Ajay, delivering some smash-stick action sequences. Danny Denzongpa has precisely narrated the last mission of team 'Baby' in the film, thereby also adorning the role of head of the intelligence bureau Feroze. Taapsee Pannu in the role of an undercover agent Priya Suryavanshi comes across as a powerful woman who handles the male dominance with an ease. This lady with the cute face surprises the audience with her raw stunts. Rana Daggubati is the "Hulk" of the team. Like always, he hasn't talked much but his personality has drawn a niche for him. Anupam Kher is at his best in the quirky role of Shuklaji. Pakistani actor Rasheed Naz possesses the power to earn your hatred with his villainy role of Maulana. His provocative speeches, his mystic face and his overall persona have made his act brilliant! Kay Kay Menon is back with his zeal in the role of Bilal. His grey eyes provide the glimpse of haunting terror cuddling in his mind. Music: Being the action-thriller film, 'Baby' has a limited scope in the music department. Yet, the striking background score holds enough of potential to get your pulse on high. The song "Mein Tujhse Pyaar Nahin Karti" used in the film goes down well with the flow. And "Beparawah" sung by Meet Bros Anjjan and Apeksha Dandekar, rolls down the end credits. Final Verdict: 'Baby' is the must watch film on this long Republic weekend. Right from the start, you won't dare to miss even a single frame that's the power of Neeraj Pandey's 'Baby'.

Neeraj Pandey's A Wednesday had left a lasting impression on my mind. I walked into the theatre with high expectations from Baby, and fortunately I walked out, as a viewer who invested her time in watching a fantastic film. Read on to know more about my opinion on this action thriller..
A team of selective officers is given a five year mission termed 'BABY'. They undergo covert operations to hunt down and kill terrorists. One such dare devil officer is Ajay (Akshay Kumar). The movie is a story of their last mission in this 5 year plan. Alongside Ajay are other officers played by Rana Daggubati and Tapsee Pannu who join him on his operations. The head of this intelligence is Feroze (Danny Denzongpa) and it is he who narrates the entire mission.
When was the last time a movie stubbornly stopped your thoughts from wandering even for a fraction of a second? 'Baby' keeps you not only riveted but also with your heart permanently stuck in your mouth, through its duration of two and half plus hours. That's one of director Neeraj Pandey's biggest achievements. And the other is, tackling of an extremely sensitive subject of terrorism filtering from Pakistan with absolutely no prejudgement and more importantly, without glossing over certain uncomfortable truths. The film subtly drives home the fact that terrorism has no specific religion or region.'
Post the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai a team of special officers is formed and they are assigned mission 'BABY'. The job is to find and eliminate terrorists who are planning attacks in various cities in India. Ajay (Akshay Kumar) the cool and deadly officer of the department leads the mission and cracks down each and every bad guy one by one, sometimes even achieves the impossible with no planning or preparation.
Rakesh, an Indian counter-intelligence officer, has been double crossed, and is captured by terrorists, somewhere in Istanbul. A bunch of six or seven toughies take turns to slap him, punch him in the face. They torture him. There is lot of blood on his face. His eyes are swollen. But when he spits, there is no trace of blood.
A central minister's smug personal secretary unthinkingly belittles the sacrifices of India's brave spies. As his boss looks on, the protagonist, an undercover agent who revels in playing with danger, gets up from his seat, walks up to the door, shuts it, walks back to the impertinent official and slaps him. The act sums up this film's firm belief that the 'heroism' of the violent 'patriot' is not to be trifled with.
While 'Baby' is a long film (2 hours 40 minutes), the director seems to wield his craft with admirable restraint. He has weaved an engaging tale that rarely loosens its grip on the viewer. A taut script has always been Neeraj Pandey's forte and 'Baby' doesn't waste time sermonizing: neither trying to wage an all-encompassing debate on global terrorism, nor painting all Muslims with the same brush. The perpetrators of terror are the villains here and the community they belong to is just...coincidental.
A top-secret counter-espionage team 'Baby' is born after 26/11. Its officers, led by Ajay Singh (Akshay), have no official records or responsibilities - except to thwart terror attacks. If caught, the government maintains 'plausible deniability' about them. But meanwhile, the trial-basis unit battles threats from Pakistan, within India and multiple global locations. Can 'Baby' bite the bad guys hard enough?
Rarely you come across an Indian movie that doesn't hit a single false note. BABY is one such film. Writer-Director Neeraj Pandey has made a brilliant film that is not only technically at par with the best in the world, but it's also a dispassionate non-judgmental take on terrorism that's completely devoid of jingoism and is extremely gripping. Full marks to Producer Bhushan Kumar for believing in such a landmark film, backed by exceptional marketing especially when it's devoid of songs.
'Baby' is a perfect vehicle for the times we live in: it gives us a home-spun hero who allows himself to be hurt but is invincible, and an enemy who is the easiest to demonise. The film is as simplistic as its title - Us vs Them, and no prizes for guessing who will win. In a messy world, where each action can have an equal and opposite reaction, what is the point of complexity?
