One-line Review: Five odd characters set out to find a postman's lost love and in turn they find the sole purpose of their very own lives Positive Points: Top-notch star-cast, Amazing direction, Goan flavor Negative Points: 'Finding Fanny' is confined to its niche audience Plot: In the lazy village Pokolim in Goa, time passes off quietly. Until an old postman Ferdinand aka Ferdi (Naseeruddin Shah) finds the undelivered letter which he wrote 46 years ago to propose his lady-love Stefanie Fernandes aka Fanny (Anjali Patil). He has spent his entire life alone thinking she has rejected him, but in real his love never went through that test. Seeing her best friend Ferdi depressed, Angie (Deepika Padukone) inserts him to find his love for which he was waiting his entire life. Angie plans a road trip to find the love of Ferdi's life. For which she gets her ex-lover Savio (Arjun Kapoor) to drive the rusting car belonging to artiste Don Pedro (Pankaj Kapur), who is obsessed with heavy figured women Rosalyn (Dimple Kapadia) who in turn happens to be the mother-in-law of Angie. Connected to each other's life, together they move out of their village Pokolim to find "Fanny". Whether they'll find Fanny or not remains a mystery, but in that process each character discovers something niche for themselves which was earlier missing in their dull lives. Direction and Other Technical aspects: Director Homi Adajania deserves hats off's for experimenting with an off-beat film 'Finding Fanny'. When Bollywood holds the belief of equating comedy with high-dose masala entertainer, here he comes with something unusual. His direction and script will make you believe that in some corner of Goa there actually lies a village called Pokolim with such crazy characters. Cinematographer Anil Mehta has beautifully captured the chirpy moments along with the scenic beauty of Goa. Sreekar Prasad and Nick Moore have crafted well the Hindi and English versions respectively, of 'Finding Fanny' into 93 minutes. Performances: To start with Deepika Padukone as Angie is simply beautiful in her floral Goan dresses. She plays a "virgin" widow, who is quite polite when it comes to dealing with a bunch of crazy old people including her loud mother-in-law, depressed best-friend and an obsessed painter. Still she fondles the desire to fall in love. Stubbly Arjun Kapoor as Savio Da Gama is at his best in his rugged avatar with those cool shades of glasses. He plays a Bombay return jerk, who left the village after getting dump by Angie. Besides starring at his ex, he is found quarreling with old people in the car. Throughout the film he holds a pride in confessing his love for Angie, until the night when she herself climbs up on him. Dimple Kapadia has delivered fantastic performance being Rosalyn, the self-proclaimed first lady of Pokolim. You will see her laughing, howling, battling and passing off sarcastic comments through out the film. Eminent actors Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapur have played their characters Ferdi and Don Pedro respectively, with utter-most perfection. While Naseeruddin has brought the blush of a teenager on-screen, Pankaj delivers the performance of an obsessed painter. Music: Mathias Duplessy and Sachin-Jigar have together composed the music of film 'Finding Fanny'. Songs "Fanny Re", "Mahi Ve" and "Ding Dong" goes in sync with the Goan flavor of the film. While, track "Shake Your Bootiya" stands out for its exceptional Bollywood-style composition. Final Verdict: 'Finding Fanny' is meant for the niche audience who are ready to accept dark comedy in the films. The regular audiences which crave for masala-entertainer might get disappointed. Homi Adajania has done a perfect job by first of all bringing the top-notch actors on board, then beautifully sculpting the film. There is no such highlight scene, but you will find the humor scattered all over the film.

If not for the presence of Deepika Padukone and Arjun Kapoor, Finding Fanny could well have qualified as a festival affair. However one has to give credit to the makers here for building such standing in the industry that they managed to rope in stars as well. Of course with actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur and Dimple Kapadia around, you do expect a classy treatment to the narrative. That you get as well but from the commercial standpoint, it is Deepika and Arjun walking the talk.

At some moments it seems that we are watching Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara again minus those exquisite breathtaking visuals, but Finding Fanny is different compared to that Hrithik-Katrina's blockbuster. Not because it didn't have that picture perfect shots in those appreciable short runtime of 100 minutes but because it lacked the finesse in displaying the solutions of personal problems, which Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara presented perfectly.

Your heart aches to watch a Hindi film where the location matters, where the stars stay within the parameters of their characters, where the humour comes through everyday situations, where the dialogue feels real and so do the emotions. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, it's a cause for celebration. Finding Fanny is one such film. It's a simple film with a threadbare plot line - a group of misfits travel together in search of lost love. But thanks to some superlative acting, you forget how thin the plot is and immerse yourself in the lives of the characters.

For most part of this film, a bunch of fantastic actors are together in a frame, sitting in a blue beaten car, presumably to find Fanny but largely to give us a delightful dollop of entertainment. Set in a sleepy village Pocolim tucked somewhere in the interiors of Goa, 'Finding Fanny' lazes and lingers like a cat under the warm sun , as its inhabitants saunter about their unhurried, monotonous days in the most casual manner.

Imagine a puppet show as large as a village", says young widow Angie (Padukone) in an introductory voiceover. She attempts to nudge us into the idle world of a Goan village named Pocolim-an off-the-map giant retirement home where Angie is perhaps one of two surviving youngsters. The other one is enigmatic 'prodigal son' Savio (Kapoor)-the man she once loved, and her dead husband's bitter childhood friend.

Homi Adajania's uncanny ability to weave a narrative in a manner that forces your psyche to look for joy, even as it leaves your mind to ponder over the finer nuances of life, has resulted in the film called 'Finding Fanny'. How often have you thought of extending a helping hand to someone who is in need? Angelina aka Angie (Deepika Padukone) quietly makes you question the same, by helping an old man who is desperately in search of his ladylove.

Homi Adajania's Finding Fanny has survived all those censor controversies and is finally set to hit theatres on Friday. And if the film's line-up is anything to go by -- what with veteran actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia and Pankaj Kapoor sharing screen space with Deepika Padukone, Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, and all of them controlled by Being Cyrus director Homi Adajania -- this is one film that has figured on the to-do list of many. But does Finding Fanny live up to the expectations the pre-release expectations had raised?

'Finding Fanny' is fashioned like a serio-comic journey, featuring a wooly romantic, a lusty painter, a middle-aged matron, a lithe maiden, and a sulky young fellow. It is an unlikely bunch, getting together for an unlikely reason, and in the way of this kind of film, we are supposed to fall in love with the characters and their quirks, as they wind their way towards their destination and discovery.

To start with I am impressed with the fact the director who made a commercial masala film like Cocktail actually made this film. Finding Fanny is not a regular Bollywood film, it's for a very niche audience. Most filmmakers say that their films are different but take my word for it because this one is actually different.
