The popularity of B-Town actors in our country is immense. One successful film and they cannot go out in public without getting mobbed. As much as the content is important and crucial for any films’ success, star power also matter to some extent if not much! If the film is super dependable and the story is trustworthy, actors these days are turning towards the profit sharing model rather than accepting a usual pay cheque. This way the actors are able to earn more in numbers and also split the risk factor from the producer.

In the near past, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan opted to share profits of Jazbaa following her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan ’s footsteps. As per the reports, Ranveer Singh did not charge his fee for Bajirao Mastani and earned multifold in the profit sharing trend. Similarly, Kangana Ranaut has now opted the profit sharing model for her first production film Teju. Following the league, young actress Alia Bhatt is also sharing profits of the upcoming film Raazi. Even Taapsee Pannu who rose to fame with Pink, does the same for many of her films in Bollywood and also down South.

Earlier, this model was followed only by the biggies like Amitabh Bachchan and the Khans. Now more number of actors seem to be following the trend. This benefits the small budget films by removing the burden from the producers. Also, for big budget movies, the actors get a good raise in their earnings, for example, Salman Khan would have got 70 crores for Sultan but thanks to the profit sharing model, the actor took home more than 115 crores, claims sources.

In a media interaction with Hindustan times , trade analyst Akshaye Rathi said, “It is good that actors are opting for this. Because if the lead actor/actress believes in the film, he or she should be ready to take that much of a risk. Why should the producers be the only ones who bear the brunt of a flop? A film is a collective effort and everyone should take the responsibility. For example, for a Dhoom 3, Aamir Khan or the Chopras wouldn’t have made as much money as they did if there was a Rs 50-60 crore pay cheque for Aamir. Even Ranveer Singh opted for back-end profits instead of a pay cheque in Bajirao Mastani.”

Talking about the new trend, Taapsee Pannu also shared, “Today, I am in a position where I don’t want to repeat the same thing and want to do something different. If this (taking a share instead of the pay cheque) is a chance for me to do something different I won’t step back just because I won’t get paid that much. I genuinely believed in the script and so thought to take this risk which is a biggest gamble of my career.”
