The Indian film industry has always had a group of directors who have been eager to tackle challenging issues in their work, creating cinema that is more psychologically impactful because it is more realistic and socially relevant. Here are a few recent movies that bravely and delicately explored tough societal stories.

Doctor G

The main character of Anubhuti Kashyap's medical comedy film, which she also directed, is Uday Gupta, a lonely male gynaecology student played by actor Ayushmann Khurrana. Due to his subpar marks, Uday reluctantly completes his training under Dr. Nandini Srivastava in the field of gynaecology even though he had wanted to join the orthopaedics department (Shefali Shah). Through a succession of funny situations and moments, the movie shows Uday's difficulties and perplexities as he tries to comprehend the gender dynamics in his society. Rakul Preet Singh plays the female lead in the movie, which was released in October.

Badhaai Do

With the exception of "Fire," "My Brother Nikhil," "Margarita with a Straw," and "Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan," Hindi movies have avoided portraying same-sex relationships in great detail. In the current smash song "Badhaai Do," Harshvardhan Kulkarni does a good job of normalising LGBTQ+ partnerships without trying to make a big, dramatic statement. Both the audience and the critics gave the movie, which starred Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar in the key parts, high marks.

Anek

However, the Anubhav Sinha-directed movie "Anek" makes an attempt to address geopolitical concerns in the region by telling a strikingly sympathetic personal story. The Hindi cinema industry continues to be glaringly bereft of North-Eastern stories. In his role as a secret agent trying to infiltrate a separatist group, Ayushmann Khurrana shows how he is eventually compelled to put aside his biases as he learns more about the social and political issues that the local population is facing. Produced by Anubhav Sinha and T-Series, the movie stars Andrea Kevichusa and Manoj Pahwa in the key roles.

Thank God

This Indra Kumar film ingeniously asks viewers to consider their choices and how ambition, greed, and thoughtless wants impact their lives and relationships. In this non-preachy morality story, a real estate broker (Sidharth Malhotra) has an accident and awakens in heaven. He is then drawn into a "Game of Life" by Chitragupt (Ajay Devgn), who makes him face his own errors.

Jalsa

Suresh Triveni's film "Jalsa," which explores how different social strata view justice in different ways, does a masterful job of illuminating this point. A feisty journalist known for her ethics and convictions, Maya Menon, her housekeeper Rukhsana, and three other characters all contribute to the narration of the narrative. These two strong, courageous women are dedicated to their families and careers, but one day a freak event turns their lives upside down and puts them on opposing sides of justice and the truth. The two mothers in the film, in spite of their differences, discover the humanity within themselves to achieve forgiveness and healing.
