They first ran across each other while practising with Barry John, the same acting coach. The performers bonded over their shared passion of film quite fast. Varun and Arjun discussed the importance of their friendship in an earlier interview. When he learned that a girl they both adored had a "scene" with Arjun, Varun Dhawan said on the show ‘Yaaron Ki Baraat’ that he felt betrayed by Arjun.He believed Arjun ought to have informed him rather than keeping it a secret.

Varun Dhawan reportedly stated, “I did not know that she was already talking to Arjun. Usne hum dono ko ghumaya. He always sat quietly in class, and he only used to talk to me. I thought I was his only friend in the class. The girl took me to an after-party. She got drunk, and while dancing with her, I thought she liked me. Since she was slightly intoxicated, the truth came out, and she said, ‘something happened with Arjun, but I am not serious, I like you.’ She said, ‘Arjun and me had a scene.’”

Varun expressed his hurt after hearing the girl's confession and remarked, “At least he could have told me about this.” However, Arjun was unapologetic for his behaviour and said, “He (Varun) would flirt with every girl in the acting school. The film Garam Masala is based on Varun Dhawan’s life.”

Despite the incident, Varun Dhawan and Arjun Kapoor continued to be inseparable.Additionally, they talked about how they constantly consult one another for guidance and support and how they have always stood by one another through the highs and lows of their professional life.Varun asserted that their playful banter serves as proof of their deep bond and shows that they are not afraid to let free and have fun.
