Fans were ecstatic to have Peggy Carter as a backup Captain America, but they were saddened when Scarlet Witch abruptly killed her off. Atwell expressed her displeasure, saying that Peggy didn't benefit from the cameo and that it wasn't her decision to have her character unceremoniously killed off.
“I’m like, ‘That wasn’t my choice!'” Atwell said about Captain Carter being mercilessly killed off not long after being introduced. “When she was like, ‘I could do this all day’ and then followed by she’s immediately cut in half by a frisbee. And the audience being like, ‘She can’t do it all day. Apparently you can’t, so, egg on your face.’ That doesn’t really serve Peggy very well.”
The ability to delve deeper into the character was more fruitful for her during her time working on the animated series 'What If...?' Atwell emphasised the freedom it gave her to concentrate only on her performance and how much she enjoyed the voice acting process. Scarlet Witch also swiftly removed several cameo actors from 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,' including John Krasinski as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic.

The purpose, according to screenwriter Michael Waldron, was to evoke an air of uncertainty and to highlight the formidable abilities of Scarlet Witch. Despite her dissatisfaction with the appearance, Atwell's talents are currently being showcased on the big screen in 'Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.'
