Origin: A Film On The Struggles Of Lower Classes Featuring B.R. Ambedkar Is Getting All Praises In Hollywood! (Details Inside)

On September 6, Ava DuVernay became the first African-American woman to exhibit her film ‘Origin’ at the Venice Film Festival, marking a watershed moment in the history of representation. To top it all off, it was the first Hollywood film to include Dr. BR Ambedkar, one of India's founding fathers.

Dr. BR Ambedkar was India's first Law and Justice Minister and chaired the committee that drafted the Indian Constitution. Gaurav J. Pathania, a Professor in the United States, played him in the film.

The American biographical drama film is based on Isabel Wilkerson's book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. The film examines discrimination through the viewpoint of India's caste system, American racism, and Nazi Germany's persecution of Jews.

How is Ambedkar incorporated in the film:

According to a story in a popular news outlet, the casting call urged for 'actors from the Ambedkar community are encouraged to apply' before the film's release and while it was in production. Perhaps the filmmaker was referring to Dr. Ambedkar's caste, the Dalits, who are classified as Scheduled Castes in India.

Dr. Ambedkar, a Dalit scholar who grew up in poverty, is well-known for his contribution to the creation of India's constitution. The film covers his accomplishments as well as his childhood struggles, such as being forced to sit on the floor of his classroom.

Ava drew parallels between Ambedkar's experience and that of Al Bright, an 11-year-old Black kid who was barred from celebrating a Little League championship with his teammates in the same pool in 1951. Al was not permitted to enter the water. African-Americans were frequently denied access to swimming pools in numerous areas across the United areas.

Ava's picture has been nominated for a Golden Lion. She described her accomplishment to the media as follows, “It is something that hadn’t happened in eight decades. That’s a door open that I trust the festival will keep open.”

About ‘Origin’:

‘Origin’ examines the "unspoken system that has shaped America and chronicles how lives are defined today by a hierarchy of human divisions." Aunjanue Ellis plays Isabel, and the cast also includes Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Niecy Nash-Betts, Nick Offerman, and Blair Underwood.

‘Origin’ discusses catastrophes in the author's life, such as the deaths of her white spouse and mother. The tragedies inspire the author to embark on a journey in which she encounters and explores various forms of discrimination all across the world. The character Isabel depicts Ava's personal journey with these topics.

Isabel's journey throughout the film provides people with insight into the personal problems of Black women. Isabel receives criticism for her views, but instead of responding, she internalises it.
