O Yeong Su, a veteran actor who plays the role of an old man in Netflix’s hit survival thriller Squid Game (2021), won the award for Best Supporting Actor at Golden Globes this year. He is the first Korean actor to win this award.
The 79 years old actor was nominated alongside Brett Goldstein from Apple TV’s Ted Lasso (2020), Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass from Apple TV’s The Morning Show (2019), and Kieran Culkin from HBO’s Succession (2018).
Squid Games, which emerged as a global hit upon its premiere on Netflix on September 17, 2021, was nominated for Best Television Series – Drama, while Lee Jung Jae was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama.
O Yeong Su, through Netflix said, “After hearing the news of the award, I told myself, ‘I’m a decent guy,’ for the first time in my life. Now, it’s no longer ‘us within the world,’ but it’s ‘the world within us’. While embracing the scent of our culture and while embracing the love for my family deep in my heart, I give thanks to everyone in the world. I hope you all live beautiful lives. Thank you.”
O Yeong Su portrayed an ordinary old man, Oh Il-nam, in the series, referred to as player 001, who wished to have fun before his death.
