<strong>Action packed, intricately detailed and entertaining</strong><br/> Rohit Shetty must firmly believe in the idiom, God is in the detail. He has an eye for intricate design. He pays attention to crafting scenes and characters. Couple that with Ajay Devgn's unfailing intensity and you have the tour de force Singham Returns. It's only major flaw, a tired story, is well overshadowed by its larger than life presentation. This is one is a text book crowd pleaser. The weakest part of the movie is its story. It's been done a million times before. Singham is now a part of the Mumbai Police. At his wrong end are a bunch of corrupt politicians and fake godmen. There's the usual family and romantic angles involving the beautiful Kareena Kapoor Khan. But the one part of Rohit's writing that scores in the film is his stance towards portraying the good side of the police. While everything else may move on a predictable track, the films leaning towards the humane side of Mumbai Police is certainly novel. The scene where an emotional Ajay Devgn takes his frustrations out on a young but poor adult is fascinating. It's a rarity to see a Hindi film showing it's hero in bad light albeit for just a few minutes. Kudos to some brave ideas.

<strong>'Singham Returns': One big dj vu</strong><br/> 'Singham Returns' is one big dj vu. Not because it is a sequel to an earlier Rohit Shetty blockbuster, but because the film is riddled with clichs and tried-and-tested antics. Like any masala film, the hero, in this case the invincible Bajirao Singham is on a chase to nail goons and teach them a lesson. No points for guessing that these goons are actually politicians and spiritual babas in disguise. Like innumerable honest cops in Bollywood, Singham too finds his powers curtailed by the shackles of an unjust system. But instead of deploying a clever plan to outdo his enemies, he waits for them to push his buttons to such an extent that his physical prowess reaches a point where it can defy sense and science. You know he's reached that point when he lets out his signature warning siren "ata majhi satakli".

<strong>'Singham Returns' is worth the 'ceetees' and 'taalis'</strong><br/> The sequel to the super successful Singham sees the return of Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) as a cop in another city. The setting is Mumbai this time. But the action and drama is on a much larger scale. This time around, Singham fights with all that's wrong with our country. The story draws inspiration from real life, whether it is corrupt politicians, cons masquerading as Babas, the helplessness of the system or the people's party. The heroes of the film are the cops, not just a cop. The story begins when one of Bajirao's team members is found dead with an ambulance full of money. To protect the sanctity of the force, Bajirao decades to investigate the matter.

If Entertainment with a lot of Kick (pun intended) is what you are looking for, SINGHAM RETURNS it is for you this week. This time, the action is based in Mumbai. There's also a talk on how they should use their energies for the nation rather than wasting their teen years.

SPOILERS AHEAD A change of scene and rank do not have the power to make any difference to Bajirao Singham's deportment. Is anybody surprised? Now a DCP, the Maratha Dirty Harry still struts around like a lord of a lawless jungle where bullets fly as fast and furious as one-liners. In his second coming, the vigilante cop relocates from a small hamlet to the metropolis of Mumbai and plunges headlong into an all-out fight against a greedy godman and a hostile politician.

In Rohit Shetty's latest family-friendly piece of entertainment, cars somersault, guns blaze, cops sail through the air, politicians are described as pimps and godmen openly lust after their female devotees. Kids will totally love the gesture, probably borrowed from Asterix comics, of cops tapping their fingers on their temples to mime the movie's main tagline "Ataa majhi satakli" (I have finally lost it), while the several lakh Indians who recently reaffirmed their faith in Parliament and voted in a new prime minister with a thumping majority might just wonder whether the anti-legislator rhetoric is outdated.

A number of storytellers seek inspiration from the masala movies attempted in the 1970s and 1980s. An era that witnessed the emergence of the angry young man. An era when storytellers such as Vijay Anand, Manmohan Desai, Prakash Mehra, Ramesh Sippy, Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai and other reputable names transported the single screen audience [there were no multiplexes then; just 'Balcony' and 'Stalls' in cinemas] to a world of make believe. An era that gave us a string of unforgettable entertainers. No wonder, a number of present-day film-makers borrow/seek inspiration from films of yore... a couple of directors even going to the extent of remaking those all-time classics.

Singham Returns has been released on Independence Day to reiterate the fact that cinema in India will never be independent. The only form of cinema that will find a release and be successful at the box office is bound to the shackles of mainstream Bollywood. There will never be an indie Gandhi - there will only be a mainstream Bajirao Singham.

Right towards the end of 'Singham Returns', a dialogue is bunged in. It is borrowed from a popular long-running TV show involving a certain Inspector Daya and a door about to battered. Everyone in the audience cracked up. It was a relief, even if momentary, because the rest of the film is a drag.

<strong>What's Good: Ajay Devgn and the thrills his punches manage to evoke.</strong><br/> What's Bad: The wafer thin plotline, hammy acting, predictable narrative and the lack of fun and excitement that drives a Rohit Shetty film. <strong>Singham Returns is strictly for fans</strong><br/>Let me start by giving you an idea of how the franchise has moved on from the first instalment.The honest and fearless Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) is now the DCP of Mumbai. He is the same angry cop but now posted in a bigger city. In the 2011 release Bajirao Singham didn't give two hoots about influential people and the power of corrupt politicians but now there is an added quality. He doesn't even care about the law anymore. A lot of steps that he takes are not in framework of the law.
