Madhur Bhandarkar, Shyam Benegal and Girish Karnad to get Presidential Award

Three personalities from the Indian Film Industry and theatre namely Shyam Benegal, Girish Karnad and Madhur Bhandarkar will be conferred the Ganga Sharan Singh Award.

Three personalities from the Indian Film Industry and theatre namely Shyam Benegal , Girish Karnad and Madhur Bhandarkar will be conferred the Ganga Sharan Singh Award.

On June 20, the President of India, Smt. Pratibha Patil will felicitate 28 people from different walks of life including Girish Karnad , Shyam Benegal and Madhur Bhandarkar , for their invaluable contribution to Hindi language cinema, under the Hindi Service Awards Scheme.

Ministry of Human Resource Development annually confers the Ganga Sharan Award (which is a literary honour that the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan confers) on writers of exceptional works in Hindi literature.

This is not the first time that Shyam Benegal , Girish Karnad and Madhur Bhandarkar are being honoured. Shyam Benegal has received the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan Awards in the year 1976 and 1991 respectively. Girish Karnad has also been the recipient of the Padma Shri (1974) and Padma Bhushan (1992).

The talented filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar will be receiving the Presidential Award for the fourth time. He was conferred the National Award for Best Film for ' Chandni Bar ' in 2001 and ' Page 3 ' in 2005. And in 2007, for his movie ' Traffic Signal ', Madhur was conferred the National Film Award for Best Director.
