Kuttey Review: Aasmaan Bhardwaj makes a promising debut with a film where Tabu steals the show

Kuttey Movie Review Rating: 3/5

Kuttey, which boasts Tabu, Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Radhika Madan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kumud Mishra, Firoz Chaudhary, and Shardul Bhardwaj on its ensemble cast, marks the directorial debut of celebrated composer and filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s son Aasmaan Bhardwaj. The trailer of the film came out a few weeks ago and gave the impression of a world that Vishal Bhardwaj has ushered us into several times with his films in the past. Does Aasmaan do justice to his father’s great legacy or falter somewhere? To know this and much more, watch Kuttey in the theatre nearest to you. You can read its review here before booking your tickets.

STORY: The story revolves around a team of corrupt police officials who are working hand-in-glove with the local drug lord Narayan Khobre (Naseeruddin Shah). Driven by greed, Gopal Tiwari (Arjun Kapoor) and Paaji (Kumud Mishra) are already in deep trouble which further multiplies after they meet some more crooked characters and also a van full of money, meant to top-up the ATMs across the city. What happens next forms the crux of the story.

HIGHS & LOWS: The strongest part of Kuttey is its cast, which manages to hold your attention with its terrific performances. The one actor who steals thunder from everyone is the seasoned actress Tabu who barely disappoints with her performances. We know if there is Tabu in the film, it has something to offer. Arjun Kapoor gets a meaty role of a corrupt police officer and he does his best to do justice to it and stand out from the rest of the cast. Naseeruddin Shah, Konkana Sen Sharma, Radhika Madan, Shardul Bharadwaj, and Kumud Mishra have limited time on screen but they make it count with their impactful performances.

Another important highlight of the film is its music, thanks to Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar. It blends supremely well with the screenplay without slowing down the pace of the film. Having said that, the first half of the film is anyway slow and the second half is where all the dots connect.

As mentioned earlier, the film is not very pacy, especially in the first half, which may act as a deterrent for those viewers who are used to watching fast-paced films. The basic storyline is not great but the screenplay by Aasmaan Bhardwaj and Vishal Bhardwaj and the direction by the former save it from becoming a tedious watch.

FINAL VERDICT: Aasmaan Bhardwaj makes a promising debut with Kuttey. The film is powered by some brilliant performances, but one actor who steals the thunder from everyone is Tabu. The pace of the film is slow, especially in the first half, but riveting performances from the ensemble cast and tons of twists and turns in the screenplay keep you invested and hooked to your seat. I am going with 3 stars.
