Anurag Kashyap on pan-India Films: Feels Bollywood is headed towards disaster as it imitates South ventures
Anurag Kashyap attributes Bollywood's recent box office failures to its propensity for joining bandwagons.
He used the "pan India" trend as an example, which is ruining Bollywood.
The director claimed that Nagraj Manjule's "Sairat" damaged Marathi cinema since everyone tried to imitate it after it became successful. Anurag Kashyap remarked that Bollywood is also being destroyed by its fixation with films about all of India. Anurag stated during a roundtable discussion organized by Galatta Plus that "everyone is striving to make a pan-India film right now. Success will be between 5 and 10%.
Two films that encourage you to tell your own stories are Pushpa and Kantara.
But no matter how successful KGF 2 was, things start to go wrong when you set up a project to copy it. Bollywood killed itself on that bandwagon. You need to locate movies that inspire confidence.
The term ‘Pan India’ began to gain popularity with the success of SS Rajamouli's ‘Baahubali’ franchise. Films like ‘KGF: Chapter 2,’ ‘RRR,’ ‘Ponniyin Selvan: I.’ and ‘Brahmastra: Part One - Shiva,’ among others, have been successful across all of India this year.
