14 Phere is a bewildering film. It's set up as a romance but the horror of honour killing looms large. The script has been incubated at First Draft - a writing workshop that used to be run by the now defunct AIB. Tanmay Bhat is a creative producer and the other erstwhile members - Ashish Shakya, Rohan Joshi and Gursimran Khamba - have been thanked in the opening credits.
Vikrant Massey is surely giving us a lot of flavours to choose from as the actor is back with a romantic-comedy in 14 Phere, after displaying his whacky side in Haseen Dilruba, last month. The film, based on inter-caste marriage, also stars Kriti Kharbanda, Gauahar Khan, Jameel Khan in pivotal roles. Vikrant essays the role of Sanjay, a Bihari Rajput while Kriti as Aditi is a Jath from Jaipur. Both their families are strictly against inter-caste marriages but as fate has it Sanjay and Aditi fall in love while studying in a college in Delhi.
To be fair and lovely, both lead actors in this film, Vikrant Massey and Kriti Kharbanda, have a warm and gentle screen presence. They're basically easy on the eye. Which is true for half of this half-made/written movie, anyway - which is too clever by half, otherwise. Up until that point, I was pleasantly surprised by what the filmmakers were up to.
Sanjay and Aditi are a couple who work for the same company and share plush digs in Delhi. Their families are unaware of this romantic coupling and would most definitely hit the roof if they found out: Sanjay (Vikrant Massey) and Aditi (Kirti Kharbanda) are from different castes.
It's a complicated (read: forced) love story of a couple involving the 'corporate couple' of Sanjay (Vikrant Massey) & Aditi (Kirti Kharbanda), who love each other but are too afraid to confess the same to their stereotypical 'anti-love-marriage' families. They don't want to elope or leave each other, so once while doing theatre (because, why not?) Sanjay figures out a plan through which he can finally marry Aditi.
It is said that all marriages are a mystery to outsiders, and 14 Phere is set on that very premise. Sanjay (Vikrant Massey) falls in love with his senior in college, Aditi (Kriti Kharbanda). They start living together in a fancy apartment in Delhi, without their families' knowledge.
If you are a sucker for big fat Indian weddings, especially of the unbridled kind that Hindi movies peddle, chances are you will take a shine to 14 Phere. The film has two. Hence the title. The problem is that the grand weddings that this dreary dramedy stages do not add up to the intended double dose of drollery.
College sweethearts Aditi Karwasra (Kriti Kharbanda) and Sanjay Lal Singh (Vikrant Massey) have a picture perfect life and love story. While the two have a successful career at the same company in Delhi, they both hail from orthodox families. Trouble in paradise begins when they decide to get married.
