Govinda whose face now shows his age but when it comes to dancing, the 90's wonder still has the swag and the grace (and this is the only thing that makes AA GAYA HERO better than MACHINE). Govinda's trademark moves and tomfoolery is back in this film sadly misdirected oops sorry directed (really) whatever it was meant to be by Deepankar Senapati.
Govinda's voice booms in the climax as he goes, "We all start from zero, take the right decisions and become hero." Unfortunately, his decision to make Aa Gaya Hero is far from being a wise one. I doubt if there ever was a script for the film. The 123-minute poorly assembled, ill-conceived showcase of an ageing superstar trying to resurrect his career is nothing short of a vanity fare.
Ravinder (Govinda) is assigned to catch a terrorist who would even give Bond villain Blofeld a complex with a hi-tech hideout in a hill and a laugh so sinisterly bad that there should be a restraining order on it. For some unexplained reason, the mission is called Abhinay Chakra. But our Hero who never sleeps runs after random bad guys, dances with skimpily class girls in too many songs, and keeps on mouthing pre-historic dialogues for absolutely no reason at all.
The film revolves around a fearless cop, ACP Ravindra Varma (Govinda) who lays down a unique plan to nab the local goons by putting up a play act. He calls his technique, Abhinay Chakra. Through the film, we see him con goons and corrupt politicians into accepting their crimes by indulging them in fake situations.
In 2014, I met Govinda at his Juhu office. A standee of a film called Abhinay Chakra stood at the side. The film has released three years later, renamed File of Abhinay Chakra - Aa Gaya Hero. And delayed films often face a grim fate. This is a Govinda home production. Not only does it star the portly 50-something actor but he is also credited with story, screenplay, dialogues and lyrics. This Govinda is sadly a desperate and shabby attempt to reclaim lost stardom and fading fame.
Let me tell you a story about a Bollywood struggler I met about 10 years ago, when I was waiting to interview director Imtiaz Ali. He had come with his photographs and the hope that Imtiaz would cast him as a hero in his next movie. "Five years," said the lad from Jharkhand, defining his struggle. "And six films." Not a single one had been released, and the struggling actor was barely able to make ends meet.
How do you get over Govinda's image from the 90's films? Simple- you don't! His brand of comedy seems a tad outdated, which explains why it must have been difficult for the super entertainer to make a dashing comeback. Aa Gaya Hero is a testament to why his films may not have worked of late.
Govinda is back to being a hero in a film that is titled Aa Gaya Hero, and that's not funny. But it's so bad that it's actually good. As Inspector Ravindra Verma, Govinda (still stuck in the '90s) is after a terrorist, who cross-dresses and calls himself 'a nature'. His weird, wolf-like laugh is the only clue to identify him, and Verma hopes to hear that laugh once again.
