Plot
Amit Sahni (Vir Das) is a high paying and successful professional in Mumbai, who's only grouse, is that he is not able to find true love in his life. He is mocked and ridiculed by his friend Pushkar (Kavi Shastri), who is apt on giving love 'advices' to Amit.
However, Amit has a list which is like a guide to finding the ideal girl in his life. A series of checkboxes of qualities of physical and behavioral features, the list 'helps Amit' to find the right girl. After dating and rejecting a lot of girls because they couldn't fit into the list, he is finally recommended one by his mother, a girl named Mala (Vega Tamotia).
Mala comes out to be a very lively, happy go lucky and artsy kind of a girl, the polar opposite of what Amit is looking for. Surprisingly, Amit gets attracted to her and goes on to fall in love with her. No sooner, they get engaged.
However, his fate plays a nasty game on him when he meets another business executive like him on an official meeting. A young, hot and extremely attractive and of course a fan of cricket Devika Dev (Anindita Nayar), whose qualities check marks all the boxes in his list.
Now, Amit is in a dilemma. He has found the 'perfect' girl only after he got fully into the wrong one.

One Line Review: A rom-com that fails to live up to the show, is at least good enough to kill time. Positive Points: Vir Das's typical comic performance; chemistry of friendship between Vir's and Kavi's character; a quite different plot from usual love stories. Negative Points: Doesn't really live up to your expectations; abrupt ending; no chemistry between protagonist characters. Plot: Amit Sahni (Vir Das) is narrating his story of love found and lost while traveling. He takes us to a flashback a couple of months before when he decided that he wanted to settle down and find the right girl for himself. He is usually taunted and given some silly loved 'advice' by his close friend Pushkar (Kavi Shastri). Taking further into a flashback, he shares that he had a girlfriend in college, who dumped him for someone else which made him draw up a list that has all the qualities his girl should have. Coming back to the present day, he went on a series of dates, but unfortunately couldn't find the right girl, who would fit into his list. One fine day, this mother (Natasha Rastogi) suggests him Mala (Vega Tamotia) who he thinks, must be odd enough to be unlikeable. Right from the beginning he finds that Mala isn't the type of girl he wanted, but in fact, is the exact opposite of that. She is a happy go lucky girl characterized by living life to the fullest, arts, creativity, no stable career and adventure sports. Even so, he gets attracted to her and goes on to fall in love with her. No sooner, they get engaged. However, one fine day during an important meeting to close a deal, he meets Devika Dev (Anindita Nayar) whom he finds to have all the qualities of an ideal girl. Now fate has played a bad game on Amit as he has finally found the girl he was always looking for, but unfortunately after getting engaged to the 'wrong one'. Direction And Other Technical Aspects: Though the direction is slow it is good enough to keep you interested in the plot. However, as the film progresses it goes on to become more and more dull. The direction is fine to give the plot a lift it needs initially, but eventually it slows down. Cinematography of the film is innovative and different. The camera angles are not like the ones that we are used to, but are quite unconventionally catchy. Performances: Vir Das in his usual comic and funny way portrays a successful young man in Mumbai who is too pedantic and strict in finding the right girl. Though Kavi Shastri doesn't have a much greater role to play, he is still the funny guy and his presence fills that space of a sidekick in a typical rom-com. Vega Tamotia is not so expressive and appealing in her role, which actually cuts out the much needed chemistry between her and Vir's character. However, what's really annoying is that Natasha Rastogi's character is shown to talk to Vir's character with a heavy usage of internet slangs and shortcuts which becomes annoying after a limit. Music: "Ab Mein Kya Karoon" composed and sung by Raghu Dixit, well narrates the state of mind of the protagonist. "Pyaar Hai Kutti Cheez" sung by Vir Das himself, is another track that explains his state of mind. Final verdict: After watching the trailers one would certainly think that this movie brings out something different and unique in the scene. Unfortunately, other than a few different and quick features, 'Amit Sahni Ki List' has nothing else to offer. Even the humor is all used up and typical.
External Reviews
Despite a great concept, director Ajay Bhuyan cannot mount his story well. It is not entirely a horrid film but quite a disappointing film simply because the premise and the concept could very well have been furthered, but the director finds himself wrapped in warped storytelling. Rom-coms need a spin of freshness to sell; this film had scope for a lot, all of it wasted on a film that could not remain lucid.
Adding that dash of humor to an otherwise simplistic love story can really up the entertainment quotient and AMIT SAHNI KI LIST is a fitting example of that. Obsessed with his dream of finding the perfect girl is the successful investment banker Amit Sahni [Virr Das]. His list is nothing but the qualities that make his Ms. Right just a female version of himself. So when he meets his opposite, Mala [Vega Tamotia], a free-spirited, adventurous girl, he is reluctant to make her a part of his life.
Shall I tell you what a deal-breaker in a perfectly acceptable relationship drama can be? It is, yes, the dreaded voice-over. In which a character is shown doing something, and that self-same character doubles up by explaining to us, superfluously and annoyingly, what he is doing. It is what films should dump if they want to wade into men-and-women territory with some wit and delicacy.
Inspired from a few Hollywood romcoms and TV shows, Amit Sahni Ki list is a easy breezy light hearted take on romance in the new age. Virr Das plays Amit Sahni who after his break up makes a list of qualities that he's looking in his life partner. It is an exhaustive list and he's confident that he would definitely meet the girl. Before he can fulfill his wish, Amit meets Mala (Vega) and the two get engaged. However, fate has something else lined up for him when he bumps into Devika (Anindita) just after his engagement.
We're at that stage in the evolution of urban Indian cinema where even marriage dramas and eternal love stories are slotted in the cosmopolitan romcom category. Hence, it is a bit (only a bit) refreshing to come across a title that promises to throw the kitchen sink of lightweight tricks at us; a film that, for fear of being too unoriginal, employs the services of one of India's favourite standup comics.
