My takeaway from Bypass Road is that perhaps it isn't such a good idea to let an actor write a script, play the lead role, co-produce the film and have his brother direct it. Because then what you get isn't a film, it's a showreel. Neil Nitin Mukesh has written the story, screenplay and dialogue of Bypass Road, which is a fantastically convoluted thriller. There are so many twists, reveals, false alarms, schemers and disgruntled lovers that I lost track of the story.
Vikram Kapoor (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is a successful fashion designer having an affair with supermodel Sarah (Shama Sikander). He finds out that she was already engaged to someone and dumps her. He finds new love in his life in the form of his intern Radhika (Adhah Sharma).
A well-appointed mansion out in an isolated spot is lit up at night. A window shatters. A body falls to the ground. A car is driven off at high speed. Another car comes barreling at it. Crash, bang, thud. A bloodied body comes to rest..
Naman Nitin Mukesh's directorial debut is in the mould of 1990s thrillers, which were themselves throwbacks to 1970s suspense dramas. It's the kind of movie packed with slinky people with lots of money and loose morals, enough red herrings to fill a deep freezer, and twists that appear all the way till the closing credits.
A suave hotshot fashion designer Vikram Kapoor (Neil Nitin Mukesh) meets with a fatal accident at night while crossing a 'bypass' road. Same night Vikram's top-notch super model Sarah Brigenza (Shama Sikander) mysteriously ends her life. What follows is a series of events where the needle of suspicion changes direction as hidden secrets are revealed that threatens to change the course of ongoing faith, fate and more.
The mess starts with a very Sriram Raghavan inspired start when Vikram Kapoor (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is seen running from a murder of Sarah Braganza (Shama Sikander). In the next immediate scene, he gets physically disabled, unable to walk. Taking the non-linear route, we see flashbacks of how Vikram is this renowned designer in love with his intern Radhika (Adah Sharma).
Even the most threadbare thrillers start out curiously. But as the master of suspense Alfred Hitchcock once said, 'There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.' Bypass Road goes around in circles and gets nowhere in its long-winded pursuit of who did it.
On the same night when super model Sarah Brigenza (Shama Sikander) ends her life under suspicious circumstances, her fashion designer boss-turned-lover Vikram Kapoor (Neil Nitin Mukesh) meets with a near fatal accident. But, these two unfortunate events are more than just coincidences and a blood-thirsty killer is on the loose.
