The virginal idealism of Neha Malini (Soha Ali Khan), the protagonist of Manish Harishankar's film Chaarfutiya Chhokare, is just one of the ingredients of this standard "social issue" capsule. Rural Bihar is a seat of rotten patriarchy and oppression. Child marriage and child trafficking are de rigueur. This is a watered-down version of the world we have seen in some of the later films of Prakash Jha. Neither the ruthless nor the aggrieved are complex-one shade defines every character.

<strong>Soha Ali Khan stands out in lacklustre 'Chaarfutiya Chhokare'</strong><br/> What's it about: Chaarfutiya Chhokare is a story of three kids trapped in the world of crime that involves child trafficking. Neha (Soha Ali Khan), a software engineer who wants to open a school in North Bihar, however little does she know about the issues that have plagued the region or the dark underbelly of criminal activities that go on. The film chronicles her helplessness and struggle to try and do whatever she can in her capacity to save these kids from becoming victims. There are quite a few brutal and hard hitting moments in the film that stand out because of some good writing and acting by Soha.

<strong>The film doesn't entertain neither does it stir your conscience</strong><br/> They say that content is king. That if a film's story is in place, that it is bound to work with the viewers. And when one makes a film on something as serious as child trafficking, one hopes to see a powerful film with a strong message. But director Manish Harishankar's 'Chaarfuitya Chhokare', dealing with pertinent issues like child trafficking and adolescent crime, falls flat from the word go.

<strong>Does any kind of logic or reasoning go into making these kinds of films?</strong><br/> A do-gooding young woman shows up driving a shiny SUV in a tiny kasba in Bihar all by herself with a single point agenda: to start a school. Point out the anomalies in the above sentence. The entire sentence is one, because, to begin with, a tiny village in Bihar isn't the kind of place for a personable young female to be swanning around on her own, especially if that area is swarming with criminals young and old, if we are to go by the film.

What's Good: It's a well intended film that has its heart in the right place. What's Bad: Everything else that qualifies as essential from a cinematic perspective.

We are halfway through 2014 and what we notice is that there is no specific genre that has dominated the year so far. At the same time, we cannot ignore the likes of those films which actually made the year thus far a memorable one. These films include many small budget films and a handful of mega budget entertainers, which did manage to create a hungama at the box-office. This week's release CHAARFUTIYA CHHOKARE is about an NRI girl and her aspirations to build a school in her native village, without being aware of the road which lies ahead that will pose many obstacles in her path. Does the protagonist overcome the obstacles and help the film emerge victorious or does she, along with the film's script, succumb to the circumstances, let's analyze.
