There's a difference between, knowing what to make and knowing how to make it. Unfortunately, in the world of cinema, good ideas are laid to waste all too often. Director Keshav Panneriy's Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai is a perfect example of that fact. They wanted to make a film where a girl muster up the courage to stand up for herself in a man's world. Not just that, her journey takes her from the limiting environs of rural India to the more globalised setting of the US.
'Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai' ends with a note on the statistics of female fortitude in India. The rest of the film doesn't even attempt to make a strong case in its favour. Yes, there are a few fleeting references, but that's about it. For most part, this movie is all talk, a little much of it. Social drama on women's empowerment and feminism intertwined with romance is a silly concoction.
Alia Patrick (Manjiri Fadnis) is brought up in a Catholic family based in Udaipur. Her father Peter Patrick loves his sons much more than her because she's a girl child. From being shifted to a government school to save money to being bullied at school, Alia finally finds happiness in college, when she falls in love with Alex (Himansh Kohli). Until, her parents marry her off to an arrogant royal, Vikram Pratap Singh (Ashutosh Rana) for money.
Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai? May be. But is this a film? Not by a long shot. Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai is more an endurance test, a lumbering mess that wanders all over the place both literally and figuratively, hobbling along in no particular direction. That it gets nowhere is no surprise. About the only thing that stands out in Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai is its punishing length. It's a 170-minute script-less blunder into which director Keshav Panneriy packs everything that he knows about India and the world. So there's discrimination against the girl child, a forced marriage, the rich-poor divide, puppy love, heartbreak, domestic violence, the looming threat of female foeticide, social activism, talk of women's empowerment, racism and the war in West Asia.
Why is this film 170 minutes long? Why is this factory worker father in blue overalls wearing so much make up? Perhaps if father and mother Parker cut down on their make up expenses they would not have to downgrade their daughter Alia's school and could afford her school fees, right? Why do mama and papa Parker treat their oldest child and only daughter like a slave? Which time period is this film set in?
It's the story of Alia Patrick (Manjari Fadnnis) and her journey which starts in Udaipur. Born in a traditional Catholic family, she faces sexism early on from her parents. In college, she falls in love with Alex and thinks it will be forever. However, they marry her off to a Rajasthani Prince Vikram Pratap Singh (Ashutosh Rana) for money. A violent, psychopath, he is a textbook masochist with a history of ill-treating women in his family. Somewhat unhappy, Alia still gives away all her freedoms and is content to sitting at home.
