Almost a decade after the release of the last part in the Jurassic Park series, we see the release of the fourth installment JURASSIC WORLD. For those who have witnessed the spectacle of the first JURASSIC PARK more than two decades ago and have grown up on Steven Spielberg's vision of the park, there will surely be feeling as to 'what new will this movie show?' Interestingly, JURASSIC WORLD soon puts this feeling to rest.
23 years after Steven Spielberg blew open the man-interrupts-evolution debate with thrilling imagery of trembling water glasses and green Jell-O, mankind returns to the Central American island of Isla Nublar-smarter, greedier and stupider. The Park is now a self-aware corporate-driven World, one that admits, "Dinosaurs aren't enough anymore". In context of modern VFX-heavy summer blockbusters, never truer words said. Therefore, the villainous remix monster is subtly named 'Indominus Rex', a genetically modified creation that doesn't look as intimidating as the graphics department would like us to believe.
Twenty-two years ago, there was little around like Jurassic Park. The T. rex of movies thundered across the scene and off it, ensuring a generation of children long after it would swear by dino lore. Few who saw that jeep being rocked about by an angry Tyrannosaurus rex in the film came away unaffected. Twenty-two years later, there is a lot around like Jurassic World. Giant monstrous things laying people and places to rubble? Of course.
Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park hit the marquee in 1993. That was a classic. Ever since, cinema and the universe have come a long way. The sequels that followed were genetically modified versions of the same DNA that includes the Jurassic World. The premise, the theme and the plot of the tale is nearly the same, nothing much has changed except for the visual presentation and a few sub-plots. The 'Park' has turned into a 'World', and even though the novelty factor of the dinosaurs has lost its charm, this film which has been obviously scaled to epic proportions to appeal to today's audience, is sporadically entertaining.
Two years ago, they released a 3D version of Jurassic Park in theatres. I reviewed it and was astounded how the experience remained magical despite the CGI-graphics goalposts having moved tremendously in the 20 years since we first saw the original. All the big-screen wonderment I'd devoured as a pre-teen back in the day stayed intact. I could take or leave the 3D, honestly, but the film, that joyous, fascinating, frightening film, stayed as exhilarating as ever.
A little over two decades after what occurred at the old Jurassic Park, the action now takes place on an island off the coast of Costa Rica that is home to a massive and carefully monitored dinosaur theme park. A group of brilliant scientists have created a hybrid dinosaur called Indominus Rex as the star attraction of the facility. Their new 'creation' so to speak, goes on a rampage and threatens the lives of everyone in Jurassic World.
Back in 1993, when Steven Spielberg's cult hit Jurassic Park came out, the world was a simpler place. We had only met dinosaurs only in dusty books or charmless labs till then. And then they were there on screen in their CGI-meets-practical effects glory and our cinema-going experience changed forever. Nothing, we repeat, nothing can outdo that first introduction to dinos, resplendent as it was in its Spielbergian wizardry. However, it is to the credit of the bigger and louder dinsoaurs, the film's director Colin Trevorrow and the cast of Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard and Irrfan Khan that while watching you compare it to the first Jurassic Park, and not its less-than-watchable sequels.
We need heroes. Especially in this world that's steadily sliding towards insanity. It has banned the coolest instant noodle ever and made Kim and Kayne have sex 500 times a day to produce one baby. And now that Hugh Jackman has decided to hang up his claws and Salman Khan has threatened to quit Twitter, who will keep your faith in the great mysteries of creation intact? Don't lose heart, the T-Rex is back and it's going to remind you that the world has witnessed greater atrocities than your boss or vegetarian sushi.
