Chhoti si zindagi chewing gum ki tarah kheench diya (a short life stretched like chewing gum), one exasperated character intones in the climactic sequence of Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana. Couldn't agree more! The title is a mouthful all right. But wait until you bear witness (if you must) to the film elongating itself unconscionably over its 131-minute runtime. It overstays its welcome by at least half an hour.

Do you believe in love? If you are an ardent fan of sob stories, then Laali ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana is for you! Director Manish Harishankar will take you on a free holiday to snow-laden exotic locales at the cost of just a movie ticket price. A tale of clichd romances and sacrificing for true love, LKSMLD has everything that will bore you to death.

This twenty something lad called Laaddoo (Vivaan Shah) wants to become rich much faster than the online money transfer and leaves his father's (played by Darshan Jariwala) cycle ki dukaan for bigger makaans and dreams. He lands at Kabir (Sanjay Mishra) cafeteria in Vadodara to bump into a sundara by the name Laali (Akshara Haasan) - seriously what kind of naamkaran are these?. Anyways, Laaddoo is assigned the job to serve coffee ki piyali to Laali who astonishingly sits from 9 to 5 in that cafe and finalizes huge deals.

There is something about a new lead pairing, especially when supported by writing that is light hearted with some sweet moments thrown in. This is what turns out to be the highlight of Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana that has its best parts woven around scenes where Vivaan Shah and Akshara Haasan come together on screen. Both actors have done one notable film each - Happy New Year and Shamitabh respectively. They were surrounded by senior actors in both films though, Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan respectively.

The dread sets in pretty quickly. Within the first few minutes of the opening credits, actually. And then it hits you: it's a two-hour movie, and this, is literally just the beginning. A beginning packed with so much information that it feels like you're cramming for your board exam. We learn that Laali (Akshara Haasan) is getting married to prince Veer (Gurmeet Choudhary) while being pregnant with Laddoo's (Vivaan Shah) child. Laddoo is tying the knot at the same venue too. His wife-to-be soon starts boring everyone with moral lectures about "doing the right thing" and confessing to Veer.

Few people in the audience knew the exact movie title. By the end, fewer even cared. I saw a lady walk out in the middle after hush-hushing to her friends that she had to feed her cat. "Which cat?" "Duh... Lucy???" "Oh!" There was a standing ovation of genuine relief by the time the film drew to a close. Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana (which, in its long-windedness, sounds like the title of a Charlie Kaufman-scripted Urdu picture), is less like a movie and more like one of those high school plays where real kids play Christmas Trees.
