Machhli Jal Ki Raani Hai at best is amateurish. Save your time, and money!
If you go to watch Machhli Jal ki Raani Hai hoping it would be a horror film about fishes and water, you are going to end up very disappointed. Not that you are going to walk out happy with any other expectation. I am actually still trying to make sense out of the film. One scene shows that the ghost likes fishes, as the possessed Ayesha (Swara Bhaskar) eats them raw. Another scene shows Ayesha get so aggressive that she almost rapes her husband Uday (Bhanu Uday). And soon after, it is revealed that there are actually multiple spirits trying to avenge their deaths. All these make me wonder which ghost is behind Ayesha's crazy antics. Clearly the writers did not intend to delve into any detail.
A frail attempt at a complex plot
This is a well-intentioned film, with horror as its genre. But sadly, there is no link of sanity in its story-line for it to merit any sense of creativity. Bhoot-preth and a baba who comes from family who is known to fight the evils of the other world is the subject. This baba is however arrested for the killing of his own family when in fact; it was a buri aatma who did them in after being miffed with this baba for trying to mess with it.
Review: Ayesha (Swara Bhaskar) and Uday (Bhanu Uday) relocate to Jabalpur from Mumbai after Uday takes up a job there. They are put up at a spacious guest house in a deserted location. In no time, Ayesha senses a mysterious presence in the house. Nightmares, hallucinations, creepy noises, paranormal occurrences and shadows start plaguing her. Scared for her family, she pleads her husband to vacate the house but he blames it on her mind games. What's the truth?
Salmon fishing in the desert
That I can, in any given Hindi language horror film, shut my eyes and use my ears to decipher every impending moment of horror/exorcism/death is perhaps the biggest drawback of this stuttering genre. This film is only an extension of most directors' obsolete interpretation of chills and thrills, with lower production values and tacky visual effects. The story can be spelled out in code words: past, water-witch, Exorcist, present, happy family, haunted house, fishtank, possessed wife, return of exorcist, great success. Why it must always end with an exorcist chanting mantras over a possessed woman's body is a question that-I suspect-will remain unanswered.
