The line from a popular whiskey brand endorsed by Dharam paaji in the '90s resonates well with this film "Khoob jamega rang, jab mil baithenge teen yaar." 'Teen yaar' possibly refers to the combined strength of the audience in any cinema hall screening this film. "Khub jamega rang" refers to this breezy comedy of errors which leaves little to complain or compliment about. In bright and cheery Jalandhar, we are introduced to Gurpreet (Tina Ahuja), a young lawyer who wishes to marry Rajbeer (Gippy Grewal), a hotel manager, who has recently got a raw deal on a divorce.

Slapstick comedies can be a risky affair for any filmmaker. Sneak in marriage, love and family into the picture and the challenge just amplifies further. Second Hand Husband treads on a fine line between funny romance and offensive humour. Most of the time it stays on the right side. But the few times it strays it really does disservice to its star Dharmendra as well as the efforts of the rest of the cast. A loud, over-the-top comedy about loony relationships and far fetched situations can be tolerated with a pinch of salt. But with Second Hand Husband the pinches turn into handfuls, all too often.

Second Hand Husband is definitely not a classic, but it manages to make you laugh out loud at some points, largely entertains and keeps you engrossed. That is a bit of an achievement for a film that comes with zero expectations. Director Smeep Kang pairs Govinda's daughter Tina Ahuja with the star of Punjab films, Gippy Grewal and throws in Geeta Basra for a triangular love story. There is absolutely no pretension as an average story told to us through some funny dialogues, happy characters and a typical Punjabi-ish loud music.

The story revolves around Rajbir (Gippy Grewal) who is in love with his lawyer and friend, Gurpreet (Tina Ahuja). The two are set to get married but there's one hitch... Rajbir's ex-wife, Neha (Geeta Basra) who is having a great time spending Rajbir's money that she gets as alimony. In order to avoid paying that huge chunk of money every month, Gurpreet advices Rajbir to get Neha married to someone else. And so Mission Dulha begins and a prime candidate for Neha is Ajit (Dharmendra), a big shot who was caught cheating his wife and is about to get divorced now. How everybody's messed up life is finally untangled is what the film is all about.

When I was about to walk into the theatre screening 'Second Hand Husband', the usher tried to dissuade me. Are you sure you want to see it, he asked. There is only one other viewer inside. Why don't you go to the auditorium next to this one, which is also showing a new film, he added. Taking umbrage, I declared I had bought a ticket for this film, and that I would see the very one.

Neha asks for hefty alimony. Rajbir finds her demands unreasonable so starts looking for a guy, who could marry her and fulfil her wishes. His groom-hunting forms the story. Meanwhile, Rajbir's boss Ajit Singh (Dharmendra) is struggling to save his own marriage as wife Byant (Rati Agnihotri) is sick and tired of his drunk, womanising ways. Despite the lack of depth in terms of story or character building, Second Hand Marriage is fairly funny in portions, thanks to the antics of Dharmendra and a talented supporting cast comprising Vijay Raaz, Mukesh Tiwari, Ravi Kishan and Sanjay Mishra.

Actor-singer Gippy Grewal had mentioned in an interview that he had attempted to make a content-driven comedy of Piku and Tanu Weds Manu Returns' calibre in his debut Hindi film Second Hand Husband. Let's just say that Second Hand Husband may not be poised to break box office records but it does succeed in delivering the funnies every once in a while in the course of its runtime. Also marking the Bollywood debut of Grewal's frequent collaborator (in Punjabi films like Bhaji in Problem and Carry On Jatta) director Smeep Kang and Govinda's daughter Tina Ahuja, Second Hand Husband employs the usual rom-com tropes that an average Hindi film of this genre thrives on.
