In one of the scenes, a tad bone-lazy (in the movie) Kay Kay Menon asks Akshay, kon hai tu? to which he responds, "Singh...Raftaar Singh," in a similar fashion as Bond would introduce himself in a 007 flick. Well, our desi-version, or rather Punjab-da-munda Raftaar Singh, 'bliing's on his sardaar avatar with some of his trademark Punjabi pranks. But all that glitters is not gold. Hang on a second, by this, we don't mean SIB is redundant. No, it's not.

It is a Prabhudheva directorial. Looking at the kind of movies that the dancing director revels in, you know you can't take this one any more seriously than perhaps a second grader's opinion on world politics. However, it is not cerebral by any standards but, for sure, raises a lot of chuckles in its two-hour plus duration, all credit to its silliness and the casual way in which it is treated.

In recent times, whenever Bollywood has turned its lens on a particular community, the result has usually worked at the box office. In a land so diverse, the quirks and eccentricities of a specific community offers a rice source of cinematic material. Director Prabhu Deva leaves no stone unturned to establish Punjab as a rich cultural hub within the first 15 minutes of Singh Is Bling.

Here's a disclaimer, before anything else: I really like Akshay Kumar as an actor. On those rare occasions when he ACTS, I mean. Sadly, those occasions are extremely rare. Therefore, when year after year one is bound to see inane, mindless no-brainers masquerading as comedies with Akshay Kumar (not) acting in them, there's a slight sense of disappointment somewhere.

As conflicting as it sounds, a lousy movie can say a lot about an actor's capabilities. Like for how long Akshay Kumar covers up the absence of plot in Singh is Bliing on the strength of his comic charisma. It's not enough, ultimately. But for what its worth, the star's frisky zeal is laudable throughout the scatter-brained script whose quirky possibilities are never realised by its formulaic filmmaker.

If you've followed Prabhudeva's work then the blueprint for this film shouldn't be difficult to comprehend. This Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson starrer is a good looking blinged out version of Singh is King. Everything is amplified. The jokes are louder, the music is more bass, the clothes have enough color to fill up a Holi scene, and there are enough slapstick situation and gags to last a season of a stand up comedy show.

There are two questions that need answers, after you've watched Singh is Bliing - what the hell does Akshay Kumar eat for breakfast to fuel the insane energy he brings onscreen and where was Lara Dutta hiding her comedic talent all these years? Singh is Bliing's opening credits roll against a remixed version of Sneha Khanwalkar's fantastically peppy "Tung Tung".

Singh Is Bliing takes an elaborate start. At first we get an introduction into the silliest character of all, Raftaar Singh (Akshay Kumar) who is a good-for-nothing soul in Punjab. While the director needs an entire song to show this trait of his, we are quite clear that Raftaar is basically a non-working, mama's boy who has an overbearing father.

'Singh Is Bliing' is a low rent comedy and doesn't care who knows it. Everything about it stoops low: IQ, jokes, scenes. Of course, there is no story, only unconnected, jerky set-pieces. The only thing which saves it-a little - is that it wears its silliness proudly on its hero's `pug' ( turban), said hero smartly reworking his good-hearted simpleton who loves his mother and respects his father, and rescues his girl.

The last time Prabhudheva and Akshay Kumar had teamed up, they had come up with the highly entertaining Rowdy Rathore, but unfortunately, the same cannot be said for their latest collaboration Singh Is Bliing. Not to say that the film is completely boring. Agreed that a few scenes do evoke helpless chuckles, but overall, the film is so disappointing that the few chuckles are not enough to save the film.

In Bollywood, there have been many films that have been made focusing a particular community. The last time we saw a popular film that was made on the 'Singh' community was SINGH IS KINNG that starred the superhit jodi of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif. This week sees the film titled SINGH IS BLIING starring Akshay Kumar in lead alongwith Amy Jackson.

Another Prabhu Deva film that operates on the principle that the world is still inhabited by Neanderthals, Singh is Bliing goes all out to redefine cinematic trash. A blundering hero in search of a mission in life, a kickass female protagonist who packs a mean punch, a sleepwalking interpreter who is more than just an English-to-Hindi translator and a whole bunch of turbaned men run riot in Singh is Bliing.

Before we get to the business end of this review, here's a quick take on why Akshay Kumar's Singh Is Bliing could well be the last word on puerile humour Bollywood tries so hard to excel in often. Because it's a film where 54-year-old Rati Agnihotri plays mother to 48-year-old Akshay Kumar (Ok, we admit, it's not extreme). But this? Because it's a film where it's director, Prabhudheva, appears on screen only to pee on other characters. Because it's a film where Kay Kay Menon keeps repeating 'I am too good, na.'
