Street Dancer 3D is a master-class in all the incredible things the human body can do. For the running time of this film - two hours and twenty-four minutes - people are pirouetting, leaping, flipping, contorting and moving their limbs in impossible ways. Watching them, I thought - if the script was half as nimble as these gifted people, this film would have been a smash. Sadly, that is not the case.

A street swarming with dancers swaying and wiggling to a wild beat hits a dead-end in Street Dancer 3D. It is an edifice built on a weak foundation: yes, a mound of rubble is what Street Dancer 3D as it collapses under its own weight. It whips up, in an unseemly fit of frenzy, a purported celebration of dance. Cinema is given short shrift in the bargain.

STREET DANCER 3D is the story of two warring groups uniting for a larger cause with the backdrop of dance. Sahej (Varun Dhawan) is an Indian origin British resident based in London with his family. He and his brother Inder (Punit J Pathak) are a part of a dance group called Street Dancers. Inder had participated in a globally reputed dance performance called Ground Zero.

Remo D'Souza knows how to make his actors move and groove, shake and scintillate. Given a majority of the actors in his films are dancers, the authenticity and realism are always taken care of. And that's exactly why the first ABCD worked because it had genuine thrill and pulsating dance pieces.

Dance dramas can really be a strenuous journey if bereft of a gripping script. Those who have been an ardent follower of ABCD franchise know what to expect from the film. Also, those who have watched only its trailer have a vague idea about what this movie can offer. Hence, burdening yourself with too much expectations won't help- neither you nor filmmaker.

The first thing a good dance movie ought to do is give us numbers that make us want to leap up to our feet right there in the aisle, and go shake-shimmy-shake. On that score alone, Street Dancer 3D, the third in the ABCD line, flubs it. Except for maybe two-and-a-half dance numbers which are passable, you are just sitting there, wondering just why is it so difficult to choreograph original, rousing sequences: the others are as much as a drag as the film.

If Varun Dhawan's abs and Shraddha Kapoor's eyeliner ever dreamed of being in their own solo movie, Street Dancer 3D is it. There's so much focus on the above, they probably deserve separate billing. As for the 3D in the title, it's nothing but a scam where a donut or drop of sweat flung in your face is the film-maker's idea of paisa vasool.

It's all about the verses between two dance groups - Team India VS Team Pakistan in London. Team India is Sahej's (Varun Dhawan) Street Dancers & Team Pakistan is Inayat's (Shraddha Kapoor) Rulebreakers. The rivalry between them is registered from the moment they meet but there's no backdrop apart from the religious difference.

Inayat (Shraddha Kapoor) and Sahej (Varun Dhawan) are both passionate dancers and captains to their respective teams Rule Breakers and Street Dancers. He and his crew are NRI Indians living in the UK while she and her friends are of Pakistani origin. The film does display India Pakistan rivalry but thankfully it isn't jingoistic.

Street Dancer 3D manages the impossible - a dance-themed movie that deploys many talented performers but which ends up offering over two hours of terpsichorean tedium. It's not enough for director and choreographer Remo D'Souza to set up a contest between Indian and Pakistani dance companies in London.

One major difference between recent Hollywood dance template films and their Bollywood counterpart is how they tackle dance as a theme. While the Hollywood films build a theme around dance and add a touch of rebellion to it, the Hindi films, on the other hand, focus on formations and fit them into a very basic story.

Two underdog rival dance teams, South Asian in origin but born and brought up in London, relentlessly fight against each other to be declared the ultimate street dancing ensemble, only to realise their real rivals are the Britishers (Bollywood's perennial antagonist).

Arch rivals Inayat (Shraddha Kapoor) and Sahej (Varun Dhawan) are the captains of two powerhouse dance teams - Rule Breakers and Street Dancers, respectively. In order to prove their supremacy over one another, both the gangs lock horns in a top-notch dance competition.

Are you one of those who love dance reality shows? Do you like the drama and the pseudo adrenaline rush you get when they declare the result? Do you appreciate the comments of the judges that are full of moral lectures? Then Remo D'Souza's third dance film Street Dancer 3D is made just for you.
