This is the sort of romantic tragedy that inevitably kicks off careers of the leads starring in it. To the point that they really never have to look back from thereon. It's set among lead characters in their early 20s, floating in young-love, yet with a base of death underneath it all.

Kizie Basu (Sanjana Sanghi) is suffering from Thyroid Cancer and has her best friend in her Oxygen cylinder, which she has named as Pushpinder. She likes visiting funerals and hugs strangers over there who have lost someone close to them. She's aware her life will end someday, and she just wants to feel the melancholy attached with it.

Dil Bechara ceased to be a film when Sushant Singh Rajput died. What was meant to be a toast to life and its many gifts suddenly became a last hurrah, a this-is-it, a tearful goodbye. Once in a while, lines between reel and real are blurred. I cannot view the film in isolation and not acknowledge the distress his passing has caused.

DIL BECHARA is the love story of terminally ill youngsters. Kizie Basu (Sanjana Sanghi) has shifted from Zambia to Jamshedpur along with her parents (Saswata Chatterjee and Swastika Mukherjee). Her life has turned upside down as she has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. This requires her to wear a pipe around her nose and carry an oxygen cylinder 24x7. One day, in her college, she bumps into Manny (Sushant Singh Rajput).

Dil Bechara is an official remake of the Hollywood hit The Fault In Our Stars (2014) starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort. It's based on John Green's novel of the same name. It features Sushant Singh Rajput in his last starring role. The film was supposed to be released in May but due to coronavirus pandemic its release got postponed and sadly in between Sushant died by suicide. Hence the film's release on OTT has been made all the more poignant.

How do we begin it? Was this how we had ever thought we would watch Sushant Singh Rajput? With tears in our eyes and smile on our faces. No, never. Let us all admit it was difficult for us to watch 'Dil Bechara' - but at the same time, we couldn't think of missing it, right? 'Dil Bechara' premiered today on Disney+ Hotstar. It is Sushant's last film and as a tribute to all his fans, the makers of the movie decided to release it on the OTT platform for subscribers as well as non-subscribers.

Dil Bechara is a fairly faithful remake of the 2014 Hollywood drama that was based on John Green's young adult novel The Fault In Our Stars. Sanjana Sanghi and Sushant Singh Rajput step into the parts played by Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort in the Hindi adaptation scripted by Shashank Khaitan and Suprotim Sengupta.

Hazel's favourite book from The Fault in Our Stars did not make it to Dil Bechara, but its famous line holds true as we sit down and watch Sushant Singh Rajput one last time. The last time he makes an 'entry', the last time he sings and dances, the last time he woos the leading lady, the last time he breaks down, unable to take the weight of it all.

It's extremely difficult to analyze a movie like Dil Bechara that has so many sentiments attached. Whenever Sushant Singh Rajput appears onscreen, you want that moment to freeze forever.

Watching Dil Bechara is an inadvertently surreal experience. How often does fiction become so hyperreal? Actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who died by suicide last month, plays a terminally-ill character in the film, Immanuel Rajkumar Junior or Manny, and we know how this tragedy is going to pan out, in both real life and on-screen, because of the film's source material, The Fault in Our Stars.

Can a film be a prophecy? A character in Dil Bechara, talking about the emptiness caused by a loved one's death, mentions the word suicide, and you freeze. Because it's been just over a month, and many of us are still struggling to make sense of the death by suicide of Sushant Singh Rajput, the leading man of the movie, which has turned out to be, sadly, his last.

'Dil Bechara' sets itself in Jamshedpur and introduces us to the Basu family. Kizie Basu (Sanjana Sanghi) suffers from thyroid cancer, which has now affected her lungs, requiring her to be on oxygen support almost all the time. With rock solid support from her parents, Kizie takes life as it comes, even taking the bleak, daily multiple hospital visits in her stride.

As Dil Bechara unfolds, two things bubble to the surface instantly - and poignantly. One is the realisation of the sheer enormity of the loss that Sushant Singh Rajput's untimely demise represents. This awareness is painfully heightened by the film itself. It rejoices in life and love in the face of impending death.
