There is one overused adage that perfectly describes a movie like Ungli. There are many a slip between the cup and the lip. Even though we're deviating in analogy from fingers to lips, we're not totally digressing. Because what may seem like the perfect chance on paper might not turn out just as flawless. The very concept of young people waging a war of wit against corruption has unlimited appeal. But as a seasoned film guru will tell you, making a film can be a tricky proposition. Director Rensil D'Silva's Ungli could've been a sexier, slicker film. But it crumbles under thanks to cheesy dialogue and lack of detail.

The premise of 'Ungli' is mighty interesting. A bunch of boys and a girl decide to form a group to terrorise the law breaking individuals, after their trainer ends up in hospital because of a spoilt rich brat. The good looking gang consisting of Maya (Kangna Ranaut), an intern at a hospital, Abhay (Randeep Hooda), a crime journalist, Kalim (Angad Bedi) and Goti (Neil Bhoopalam) form the 'Ungli' gang and they take upon themselves to teach criminals and corrupt guys a lesson in humility and uprightness. ACP Kale (Sanjay Dutt) is given the task of bringing the 'Ungli' gang to book. Kale seeks the support of reluctant rebel of a cop, Nikhil (Emraan Hashmi).

A group of masked vigilantes calls itself the Ungli Gang, because its objective is to ungal karo (a colloquialism for "fingering") the corrupt. Fixing the bad guys can be so much fun, and so cathartic if the right buttons are pressed. Ungli is empty, and left me collecting my jaw from the floor, where it lay through the film.

Ungli couldn't stand half of our expectations and we are also disappointed over the good actors gone waste. Director Rensil D'Silva tries to portray a gang who takes over the crooked sections prevalent in our society but ruins the idea with bad execution, simplistic twits and non-feasible methodology.

Ungli is Rang De Basanti version 2.0. Rensil D'silva who wrote RDB revisits the concept of cleaning up the society of social evils like corruption, red tapism and asking the youth to start a revolution. This time around the story is set around four friends Abhay (Randeep), Maya (Kangna), Goti (Neil) and Kalim (Angad) who seem like regular people with normal jobs, but as night descends they turns into super heroes doing 'ungli' to those who wrong the common man.

Ungli is directed by Rensil D'Silva who is famous for his dud Kurbaan (2009). This time he actually tries to make something different. Ungli is a story of a group of people from different walks of life who get together to fight corruption. It's the usual aam aadmi standing up against the corrupt system.

The central premise of Ungli is as unoriginal as they come: a gang of four vigilantes sets out to name, shame and tame the corrupt in the city of Mumbai after one of their own is battered in a case of road rage. In a state of panic, the police establishment deputes an upright and headstrong cop (Sanjay Dutt) to go after the masked and mysterious citizen crusaders. How hackneyed is that! Ungli , Rensil D'Silva's second film as director, is a lackadaisical thriller that gets its fingers into boiling hot water in trying way too hard to make the right noises.

If paradoxes are par for the course in Bollywood, here's a freshly baked one: Emran Hashmi's Ungli is like the Aamir Khan-starrer Rang De Basanti, except that it so totally isn't. On a superficial level, the similarities between the two films are in your face: Like the 2006 starrer, Ungli too has a force of young vigilantes who set out to clean the system, and with it the country, of evil, corrupt and morally bankrupt people in positions of power. Like RDB, the foursome is woken out of their careless slumber after they lose a friend to the ways of the world. So, okay you know what happens next: the friends are sucked into a vortex of corruption, and they have to eventually tread on the wrong side of law to get their friend some semblance of justice.

Coming from the writer of Rang De Basanti, Ungli has the same spark of brilliance. Rensil keeps the story moving fluidly towards a fantastic climax, which is nothing short of genius. The camaraderie between its actors is palpable and despite a few vital pitfalls, the film stays true to what it has set out to achieve.
