As obvious as chai biscuit, this new addition to B-town wedding kit doesn't fit. Director Binod Pradhan goes Balle Balle on the ridiculously predictable Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai plot thingie where best buddies discover special feelings for each other at their wedding.

This film is about a Punjabi wedding and somewhere in the middle of the ongoing noisy band, bajaa and obnoxious baraat, the groom realises that he's in love with his female best friend instead of the bride. So, if you are expecting novelty, go to the next screen. With this movie, all you get is predictability mixed with unpalatable execution, evidently rustled up by an overenthusiastic but incompetent chef.

The opening credits thank Sanjeev Kapoor among others. They also credit a certain Harpreet for "wedding footage". This ominous beginning makes you wonder if these two men are respectively responsible for the two words in the film's title. Unfortunately, they're not. Aadi (Diganth Machale) is getting engaged. But he can't, without his best friend, Anushka (Anushka Ranjan) who has just arrived from London for the event.

Exotic locations, pretty faces and the trappings of a great Indian wedding scenario all count for naught when the editor of a film makes a hash of it. That's the exact story of Wedding Pullav. It's a film lost in the ideas it's trying to execute. It doesn't help that most of those ideas are old clichs of love triangles and family dysfunctions. But even then, it's merciless when the editing of a film is so brazen that you don't need technical knowhow to see it's all going South.

Wedding Pullav is about, well, a wedding, and composers Salim-Sulaiman come on board with lyricist Irfan Siddiqui to make the music. Party Karni Hai starts the album, with a Honey Singh-kind of song and lyrics, 'Jitni Bhi Botalein Hain Woh Khaali Karni Hai, Mujhe Party Karni Hai.' Salim Merchant and Apeksha Dandekar don't get as naughty but they do promise to get drunk and make merry with this dance number.

Anushka aka Lambu (Anushka Ranjan) and Aditya (Diganth Manchale) are 'best friends' (think Shah Rukh-Kajol in KKHH or Julia Roberts and Dermot Mulroney in MBFW). They've always loved each other but realise that they are in love with each other when they are on the verge of getting married to other people. Anushka gets engaged to Jai (Karan Grover) and Aditya to Ria (Sonalli Sehgall). Can the two make up their minds for good before things get too far?

Bland and unenticing, Wedding Pullav is a concoction that is too stale and sloppy to tingle even the least evolved of cinematic taste buds. There is much in the film that defies logic. But nothing is more mystifying than the names of Binod Pradhan and Rishi Kapoor in the credits. How did Pradhan, one of India's finest cinematographers, get dragged into directing this laughably vapid love story?

'My Best Friend's Wedding'. 'Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai'. And the many other variants of this old, old theme-old pals discovering non-platonic feelings for each other at their wedding - flash through your head as you sit through this 'pullav'. It is a misnomer, though. 'Pullav', a well-made one at any rate, is meant to be seasoned with the right condiments and presented with every rice grain separate, fluffy and aromatic.
