One line Review: Decent performances by the leads, lots of action, and a little romance sprinkled with a bit of drama sums up the film 'Hero'.
Positive Points: Both the debutants tried their level best to make the most of the golden opportunity bestowed upon them by their mentor superstar Salman Khan. While Athiya makes a regular Hindi film heroine, Sooraj's act was more impactful. The young actor has worked hard on his physique and it shows! His charming personality surpasses the weak script and over the top dialogues.
Negative Points: The background score did not match up with the visuals at all and it turned intense fighting scenes into a laugh riot. The direction was average and it could not build up what looked like a promising plot. The execution of the script was weak while the movie lacked the grip and it could not keep the audiences involved.
Plot: Sooraj Kaushik (Sooraj Pancholi) is a local thug with character who is brought up by his godfather Pasha, an underworld criminal. Sooraj kidnaps Radha (Athiya Shetty) who is the daughter of Inspector General Shrikant Mathur (Tigmanshu Dhulia), on the instructions of Pasha (Aditya Pancholi) as the IG is responsible for Pasha's arrest. Sooraj Kidnaps Radha in the disguise of a cop and she, being the daughter of the IG thinks she has been abducted for protection reasons and agrees to flee with him. Charmed by Sooraj's attractive personality and decorous behaviour, Radha falls in love with him and even he falls for her. Eventually, when Sooraj confesses the truth to Radha, she still decides to stand by his side.
Sooraj surrenders himself to the police for the love of Radha and gets imprisoned for two years. Radha's family insists and make her fly to Paris so as to make her forget Sooraj and complete her further education. But, the lovebirds never get over each other despite being separated for such a long tenure. When Sooraj is released six months early on parole for good behaviour in jail, Radha is there to receive him as promised. Radha makes him leave all his bad practices and does all she can to turn him into a guy, to whom her family will have, no objection marrying her. But, as all the Bollywood films have it - 'the path of love is thorny'! Then, enter Ranvijay (Vivan Bhatena), the baddie, who disrupts the whole set up by both the young lovers and creates havoc in their love story. Will Sooraj and Radha will ever be able to unite considering the roadblocks in their love life, makes the further watch.
Direction and other Technical Aspects: The director Nikhil Advani has not been able to take the film where it actually could, leaving it being an average one. The execution and the presentation were not up to the mark. Though, certain parts were accurately captured and filmed. The dialogues teleported the audience back to the 90's and the background score for some sequences was a perfect misfit. To be precise, it turned some very intense sequences into a laugh riot! Cinematography was quite decent while the editing was crisp. Over all, the film is entertaining in parts but is not impactful. The songs are good and catchy.
Performances: Sooraj Pancholi makes a promising debut and has that charm and looks of a Bollywood hero. His performance is good and he manages to pull off his role with conviction.
Athiya Shetty as a young, carefree girl Radha, is good. Although, it felt like there is nothing very special about her, other than being a star kid but, sure she has made a decent attempt to make the most of the rendered opportunity.
All the other supporting actors performed their part fairly well and support the storyline in all the correct ways.
Music: There are many songs in the film and most of them are good and likable. The title track 'Mai Hu Hero Tera' is a melodious one, 'Dance Ke Legend' is rocking a dance number, 'Khoya Khoya' is a sweet love song. Other songs are also catchy and appealing. All of them are already topping the music charts.
Final Verdict: 'Hero' sums up for a typical masala Bollywood movie that can be a complete family entertainer. Though, it has its share of faults and flaws, it can be a decent one time watch. For all the movie buffs, this film can be your fun weekend treat that can be thoroughly enjoyed with your friends and dear ones.
