Ghazal Maestro Mehdi Hassan Dies after Prolonged Illness

Mehdi Hassan, the India-born legendary Ghazal maestro, today passed away at a private clinic in Karachi. He had been admitted to the Agha Hospital in the southern port city of Karachi some days back.

Mehdi Hassan, the India-born legendary Ghazal maestro, today passed away at a private clinic in Karachi. He had been admitted to the Agha Hospital in the southern port city of Karachi some days back.

He was suffering from different ailments and ultimately died due to multiple organ failure at the age of 84. When the news of his sad demise reached his fans, hundreds of Mehdi's fans gathered at the Agha hospital.

Mehdi Hassan's son Arif Hassan said, "My father passed away at 12:22 PM after a long battle against different ailments."

As a Ghazal singer, Hasan was very popular in the Indian-subcontinent. He was born in India's Rajasthan state in 1927 into a family of traditional musicians. At the time of Partition in 1947, his family migrated to Pakistan. His last performance in India was in the year 2000. Due to his illness, he had to cut back on his shows in the late 80s. He wanted to meet Dilip Kumar , Amitabh Bachchan and Lata Mangeshkar .

Mehdi Hassan's evergreen hits like 'Patta patta, boota boota', 'Kab ke Bichhare', etc. will ever be remembered by his fans.
