In 1983, India won its first ever cricket world cup, which changed the entire scenario of the sport in our country. The then captain of the young team was Kapil Dev, who took the underdog team winning the prestigious cup against the masters of the game, the West Indies. Director Kabir Khan got so attached to the victory that he expressed his wish to make a movie to showcase the journey. A few weeks back it was announced that the filmmaker will make the movie on the 1983 world cup win and actor Ranveer Singh was officially announced to be portraying the role of legend ‘Kapil Dev’. Though the film was announced weeks ago, Reliance Entertainment announced the release date of the movie on Sunday via a tweet, which read, “@RelianceEnt & @FuhSePhantom in association with Vibri Media & Kabir Khan Films to release ‘83 on 5th April 2019!”

Director Kabir Khan said, “As a young schoolboy when I watched India win the 1983 Cricket World Cup I had no idea that from that day onwards Cricket in India will change forever. As a filmmaker, for me, the journey to that win, filled with raw energy and sheer passion of that young Indian team, is probably one of the most exciting stories I have worked on. And it’s great to have Ranveer come on board to play Kapil Dev, as honestly, I could see no one else for the role, ever since I started finalizing the script.”

Madhu Mantena of Phantom Films said, “We are extremely proud to be a part of ’83. It is a story waiting to be told. I am sure the audience across the globe will love the film when it releases on April 5, 2019.”

’83 will be jointly produced by Reliance Entertainment and Phantom films. To be helmed by Kabir Khan, it will hit the screens on April 5th of next year.
