Critic Reviews
One Line Review: A lazy attempt of making a horror movie which is unable to frighten. Positive Points: Character performances, Few dialogues, presentation of the child actress Doyel. Negative Points: Background music, Repeated story, Poor screenplay, Predictable scenes Plot: Abhay (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) is a psychotic and mentally disturbed , the jobless guy who is under depression. He often beats his wife Maya ( Bipasha Basu) but loves his seven year old daughter Nia (Doyel Dhawan) very much. He is very possessive of his daughter. Eventually he gets distant with his wife because of his misbehavior with her and gets closer to his daughter. He over and over again argues and fights with Maya doubting her loyalty. Due to this, Maya gets a divorce from Abhay and wins Nia's custody. But Abhay being possessive and very much attached to Nia is unable to handle the fact. He accidently succumbs to death in an accident. He returns back from his mystical world to get his daughter with him at any cost and Maya, being an apprehensive mother tries to rescue Nia from her dead father any how. Will Abhay get succeeded in getting Nia along with him in his world? Will Maya be able to stop Abhay from snatching Nia away from her? What will be Nia's reaction when she sees her father as a ghost? Direction And Other Technical Aspects: Director Suparn Verma has totally failed in tying the loose ends. Despite having a good star cast like Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Bipasha Basu, the director fails to utilize their potential. The story is weak and the screenplay is poor which falls short of viewers' expectations. Using the Hollywood visual effects in few scenes isn't enough to make a good film. The film does not get you those goosebumps you get while watching the horror flicks like '1920' and 'Shaapit'. Performances: Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a very good actor but his potential is not utilized by the director fully in the movie. He does not have any powerful dialogues in the whole film. Bipasha as usual proves herself and gives justice to her character of the anxious and concerned mother. But the child artist Doyel Dhawan steals the show. She portrayed her character very nicely and looks confident on screen. Shernaz Patel and Jaideep Ahlawat are okay. Music: Background score does not compliment the storyline. There are no songs in the movie. Final Verdict: If you are waiting for a great horror movie then please do not expect much from Aatma. It will not stand up to your expectations.
