One line Review: Stupendous execution of an exceptional storyline. Expect thrill, mystery and suspense to the core. Positive Points: The mind boggling depiction of the whole scenario of the 1940s era in a war torn Calcutta. The strong script, phenomenal narration and story construction, praiseworthy direction by Dibakar Banerjee and remarkable performances by all the actors. The suspense and the mystery holds you and keep you hooked till the end. The involving plot of the movie drags you to an extent that even you start assuming and suspecting things, trying to solve the mystery with Byomkesh! Negative Points: There was not much to complain about in the film apart from a few frames and scenes which are added unnecessarily. Plot: In the bustling city of Culcutta during World War II, Byomkesh Bakshy (Sushant Singh Rajput), a self-assured, discreet, collegiate is approached by his classmate Ajit Bandopadhyay (Anand Tiwari) to find his missing father. To get a better understanding of the case, Byomkesh decides to stay into the boarding house where Ajit's missing father used to reside. The house was run by Dr. Anukul Guha who administers free health care for the poor. While on his hunt he unintentionally staggers upon a dark secret. The mysterious plot unfolds when Byomkesh tries to solve the case piece by piece and while doing so touches the most unexpected cards leaving you in awe! After an unexpected twist, Byomkesh gets a better grip of the case and as he digs further, the whole new mystery of a dangerous gang unfolds. The drug scenario, the brutal bloodshed and several other pieces is the evidence of the violent situation of the war torn era. The fine eye of the director has taken care of all the aspects and made every bit of it believable. Where will this case lead him to is the further watch. Direction and other Technical Aspects: The director Dibakar Banerjee deserves to be applauded for his superlative work in the film. The backdrop, the setting, the mannerisms, characterisations and every other little thing was handled with perfection. The stunning camera work and cinematography score full marks. The quirky and witty dialogues were a perfect treat. The strong script and writing should be praised too and the build up of the movie was fantastically done. Performances: Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is a comman man and no super hero, who is young, restless, self assured and also makes mistakes but has the courage to face everything with valour and Sushant Singh Rajput fit the bill perfectly. He defines his character and stays true to it throughout the story so much so that you start admiring his wit and you get by his side without even knowing it. Anand Tiwari has also done a brilliant job as Ajit. He along with all other supporting characters namely Neeraj Kabi as the razor sharp physician, Divya Menon as Satyavati, Meiyang Chang as housemate Kanai and seductress actress Swastika Mukherjee as Anguri Devi have portrayed their part well and maintained the grip of the story as the plot demands. Music: The movie does not have many songs which is indeed in the favour of the film. The background sound and the special tracks are nicely composed and are put in aptly. Final Verdict: The mysterious tale which turns grey and later falls into a darker shade is truly a must watch if you love suspense movies. This film has a lot to offer and will keep you hooked and involved with its thick story construction throughout. The depiction of an ancient setting of 1940s, the thrilling mystery, the deceptive suspense and the wit of the restless detective earns 4 out of 5 stars.
