Varun (Omkar Kapoor) is in love with Riya (Nimisha Mehta). Riya's dad (Manoj Joshi) is wheelchair bound and hence she doesn't want to get married. Varun lies to her that he's an orphan and settles happily in her house after marriage. Trouble starts when Varun's father (Rishi Kapoor) and his maternal uncle (Rajesh Sharma) drop in from Punjab to Mauritius because they are missing him.

The story of the Jhootha Kahin Ka revolves around the life of two friends Varun (Sunny Singh) and Karan (Sunny Singh). Both, settled in Mauritius, fall in love but have a certain set of issues with their respective partners. Varun's girlfriend Riya (Nimisha Mehta) doesn't want to leave her physically-disabled dad Mr. Mehta (Manoj Joshi) after marriage. Whereas Karan's girlfriend Sonam (Rucha Vaidya) is all ready to get married but there's an issue.

The dated 1990s-style comedy Jhootha Kahin Ka gets trapped in its own web of lies. Varun (Omkar Kapoor) fibs that he is an orphan in order to marry his sweetheart Rhea (Nimisha Mehta) and move in with her sexist father (Manoj Joshi) and fashion-pot mother (Lillete Dubey). Varun's friend Karan (Sunny Singh Nijjar) has lied to his girlfriend (Rucha Vaidya) that his elder brother Tommy (Jimmy Shergill) is in the United States when he is actually in jail.

Varun (Omkar) and Karan (Sunny) are friends and partners-in-crime, and their course consists of a) girls b) girls c) girls. Don't get me wrong, they aren't playing fast and loose; they are steadfast. But they are liars. They lie for true love. Haha? No, boohoo. This alleged comedy of errors, in which are complicit such veterans as Rishi Kapoor and Rakesh Bedi, bids fair to leap straight into the worst films of the year list. The dialogue is risible. The performances are loud. The film is beyond awful.

In the 90s, David Dhawan made atrocious comedies about the most inappropriate subjects. For instance, if I remember correctly, Dhawan made three different films about a man having to juggle two wives, with fidelity being the gag - I say three, there may well have been more. Yet even this bawdy premise was rendered mostly innocuous thanks to preposterously un-salacious leading men like Govinda and gifted actors like Anil Kapoor, making the film play out like a tasteless joke. A tasteless but often funny joke.

Yograj Singh (Rishi Kapoor), proud of his ancestral property and farms wants his Mauritius returned son, Varun to join him in the family profession. But Varun (Omkar Kapoor) has other ideas. He heads back to Mauritius to join his college buddy Karan (Sunny Singh) so they can job hunt together. But once there, he ends up finding a girlfriend before a job.

This may sound too preposterous but throughout Jhootha Kahin Ka, I was thinking of Hrishikesh Mukherjee. A bunch of his gentle and genteel comedies - Chupke Chupke, Golmaal, Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate - have sprung from mistaken identities and harmless lies. Smeep Kang also tries to build his film on a similar web of falsehoods and adds elements of the Luv Ranjan brand of romcoms, told from the point of view of callow young men. But, beyond a few inspired moments towards the end, the film refuses to fly.
