Plot
Munna (Tiger Shroff) is an orphan, who was found by an aging dancer (Ronit Roy) on an empty road of Mumbai. Michael used to be a hit background dancer in Bollywood films once. But with age, opportunities dry up for him and soon he is replaced by much younger and good-looking dancers in the industry. When he finds Munna, he raises him as his own son. When Munna grows up to become a sturdy and handsome man, he is naturally inclined towards dance, something Michael does not approve. He stops Munna from wasting his time on dance and advises him to take his studies seriously and focus on a career in the corporate world. But Munna hardly listens to him; he is busy dreaming about a world where everyone knows him for his talent. He has been idolized Michael Jackson since his childhood and wants to be like him.
But his destiny has something else in store for him. Munna comes to Delhi for some work and happens to meet Mahinder Fauji (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). Mahinder has recently become rich by selling acres of land to builders in Gurgaon. Now he owns a hotel and claims to be in love with a girl Dolly (Nidhhi Agerwal) who is double his age. Mahinder offers Munna a lot of money for teaching him some dance moves so that he could impress Dolly who is a brilliant dancer and dances in a private hotel. When Munna sees Dolly for the first time, he loses his heart. After a couple of meetings with her, he comes to know about her dreams. Dolly, who hails from a small town, wants to go to Mumbai to win a dance reality show and become famous. Both fall in love soon. But, after a couple of days, Dolly flees to Mumbai to participate in the dance completion. Mahinder is left fuming with rage. He then sends Munna to Mumbai to find her whereabouts. Soon, Mahinder comes to know about the love affair of Munna and Dolly. He tries all possible things to wreak havoc in their life, but eventually leaves his tenacity and allows them to live peacefully.

Out of job soon after the shoot, the drunken Michael finds an abandoned baby boy on the road; he brings him home and calls him Munna. 'That's why' the movie is called MUNNA MICHAEL and excuse me, it's not a father son bonding wala story (later on what it intended to be and what it became). In the background a tune similar to the opening notes of MLTR ((Michael Learns to Rock) 'That's why' (again but for a different reason) number is playing smoothly.
Michael is a background dancer in films who is thrown out of his job due to age. On the same night, he finds an abandoned newborn baby lying in the garbage. Michael raises the child who grows up dancing to the tunes of Michael Jackson. While Munna nurtures the dream of becoming a dancer, his father wants him to take up a corporate job, marry and have kids. Munna starts challenging rich kids in dance clubs and earns money. After he is banned entry in Mumbai clubs, Munna moves to Delhi.
There should be a genre of films called fan-pleasers, if there isn't one already. Munna Michael is precisely that by design - a dance-actioner that must keep its focus firmly on showcasing the dancing prowess of its leading man, Tiger Shroff. His repertoire reeks of such well-designed fiestas, most of them directed by Sabbir Khan, who helms this one too.
Michael (Ronit Roy) is an ageing background dancer who finds a newborn in a garbage heap. That kid grows upto be a fabulous dancer Munna Michael (Tiger Shroff) who idolises Michael Jackson. Things take a turn when he befriends a gangster Mahinder Fauji (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who wants to learn dance well so he could impress a club dancer Dolly (Nidhhi Agarwal). He hires Munna to teach him but Munna falls for the girl too and how this unusual love triangle plays out forms the crux of the film.
What do you do when an actor's dancing skills get noticed in his debut itself and he becomes a sensation overnight? Cash in on his talent of course, and not feel the need to explore anything beyond what he believes his fans would admire him for. And therefore, in almost every film one finds Tiger Shroff showing off his moves in the flimsiest of themes.
There's an obvious chalk and cheese element to Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Tiger Shroff's pairing. One started out as an extra and moved his way up to become one of the finest actors in the country, another is a star son whose three films-long showreel mirrors the monotony of the quintessential Bollywood hero. The two men could not be more different aside from the fact that they have both been judged for their unconventional looks at some point.
It's 1995. An aging dancer with a disturbing Michael Jackson hangover is removed from the chorus line of a dance troupe. Michael (Ronit Roy) is devastated. He's seeking solace at the bottom of a bottle but fate has him wander past an abandoned baby. Michael adopts the child and raises him as Munna. Inspired by his father, Munna Michael (Tiger Shroff) becomes a dancing machine and makes a quick buck by pulling cons on the dance floor. His inspiration is also Michael Jackson.
Director Sabbir Khan and actor Tiger Shroff have a partnership that so far has paid dividends at the box office, beginning with Shroff's debut Heropanti and then, last year's Baaghi. The goal, foremost, has been to showcase Shroff's largely inimitable fighting skills. But in Munna Michael, their third venture together, the template more or less stays the same; only the audience sees more of Shroff dancing and a Shroff with a natural beard.
This is a classic demonstration of filmmaking by rote. A big city foundling grows up into a young man who adores Michael Jackson and is determined to follow in the footsteps of the King of Pop. The Mumbai lad hopes that his chops as a dancer will one day be his ticket out the chawl where he was raised by Michael (Ronit Roy), a hard-drinking Catholic bloke no different from all the garrulous Catholic characters that we have encounters in Hindi films over the years. The foster-father never graduated beyond the level of a chorus dancer. Munna, the abandoned boy he rescued off the mean streets, does not want to end up as one.
When Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Mahindra Fauji breaks into a dance to Gandi Baat amidst paintings of the British Lords and Ladies, surrounded by Grecian statues, Munna Michael appears to have a thing going. When Mahindra (pronounced Mahinder) sits on the roof of his garish big house in a village overlooking shiny Gurgaon towers, and talks of how he manipulated Lal Dora and "DLX" to build his empire, we watch on. When we are duped into believing this is going to be a film about a hoodlum such as Mahindra wanting to learn to move like Michael Jackson, to win over a girl he loves, we smile thinking MJ would approve.
Munna (Tiger) is an orphan brought up by an ageing chorus dancer Michael (Ronit) in a Mumbai chawl. The boy grows up idolising Michael Jackson. To realise his dream of grooving like the King of Pop, he even agrees to tutor a hoodlum, Mahindar Fauji(Nawazuddin). Their bromance turns ugly when both end up falling in love with Deepika aka Dolly (Nidhhi).
He shakes a leg again in Munna Michael after almost three decades, and that makes for a promising opening. His character believes Michael (Jackson, of course) lives forever, but getting thrown out of his dancing troupe, wavers his faith in dancing as a profession. So, he takes to drinking. This is what disillusioned artists do in Bollywood. But that's not all. He then finds an orphan in a dustbin and brings him home. Because this is also what Bollywood does.
MUNNA MICHAEL tells the story of a Michael Jackson fan from the streets of Mumbai whose life changes when he meets a beautiful, charming girl and a Delhi goon. Munna (Tiger Shroff) has always been a fan of MJ. He also doesn't take it lying down when people try to be oversmart and has no qualms in breaking their bones. During one such action adventure, he comes in contact with a ruthless gangster from Delhi, Mahinder (Nawazuddin Siddiqui). When Mahinder realizes that Munna is a born dancer, he asks him train him and help him become a pro dancer. Munna agrees, reluctantly.
Star kid Tiger Shroff, who has been displaying his skills on the dance floor since his debut film Heropanti, finally gets a dance flick of his own... but does Tiger manage to own the film? Let's find out... Set in Mumbai and Delhi, Munna Michael is about Munna (Tiger Shroff), an orphan raised by a former background dancer Michael (Ronit Roy), who wants Munna to get a corporate job and not make a living from his dance skills because of his own bitter experiences.
