Pooran (Sunny Deol) and younger brother Kaala (Bobby Deol) live together in Amritsar with Pooran's two little sons. They've inherited from their ancestors the legacy of the Ayurveda medicine, 'Vajrakavach', a famed remedy which can cure all ills. Pooran devotes his life to help cure people by using Ayurveda in general and 'Vajrakavach' in particular for the treatment of all kinds of ailments.
In the first two instalments, Dharmendra, Sunny Deol & Bobby Deol played the role of father & sons trio. But in this one, the makers have took a different route making Pooran (Sunny Deol) and Kaala (Bobby Deol) brothers & Parmar (Dharmendra) their tenant. Pooran is an Ayurveda doctor and possess a formula for a medicine called as Vajrakawach, which apparently can cure any disease.
Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se makes for such a self-aware title. The Phir Se probably alludes to again, but 'not again' is more like it. There's no apparent reason why there should be a third Yamla Pagla Deewana reunion especially after the silly but sufferable first and a bored orangutan dancing to Sheila Ki Jawani in the subsequent.
The third instalment of the Yamla Pagla Deewana series - YPD Phir Se - marks a fresh start for the franchise. It tells a tale that is brand new and derives nothing at all from the earlier two parts. But despite the major tweaks in the roles that it allots to the three lead actors, this action comedy does not exude much originality.
Actor Binnu Dhillon is my latest discovery at the movies. Just a few weeks ago I spotted him in a kooky Punjabi comedy Vadhayiyaan Ji Vadhayiyaan. His mere presence in Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se is enough to make the film feel more a Punjabi than a Hindi film; the Gujarati, Daman-Surat, clash of cultures side of the story notwithstanding.
Punjabis like to get soused. They eat chicken. They do bhangra. They address children as 'puttar'. And if they happen to be the 'papa-betas' trio of Dharmendra, Sunny and Bobby, they also star in a franchise which allows them to keep working. Gujaratis are veggie-loving, suspicious of Punjabis and other communities, and constantly saying 'kem cho' and 'majaa ma'.
My lasting memory of Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se is that everybody drinks a lot - there are vodka shots, daru desi, fancy champagne, neat whiskey, liquor mixed with nariyal paani, a character who begins drinking with breakfast and another who creates a ruckus after getting drunk at 10 in the night.
YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA PHIR SE is the story of one man's fight against a corrupt pharmaceutical company. Puran (Sunny Deol) is an Ayurveda expert who runs his clinic in Amritsar. He uses ancient medicinal knowledge passed on to him by his forefathers. Marfatia (Mohan Kapur), owner of Marfatia Pharma, tempts Puran's younger brother, the good for nothing Kala (Bobby Deol), that he'll offer Rs. 1 crore if he can convince Puran to part with the 'vajrakawacha' that can cure a host of diseases.
After the disastrous Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, the Deols (Dharmendra, Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol) are back to try their luck with the franchise one more time in Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se and if nothing else, the trio deserve a grand salute for being brave enough to attempt a third film in the franchise after the second one failed miserably at the box-office.
The Deols are back after their successful stint in 2011 with the first 'Yamla Pagla Deewana' which fared well due to freshness of crazy banter between the three. However, the latest addition to this comedy franchise doesn't come close to what they claimed to be - Entertainment.
The first two installments of the YPD franchise were happy to just put the three Deols, Dharmendra and his son's Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol together in one frame and let them fall prey to one set of slapstick antics after another. The second installment, if one remembers correctly, even took recourse to using the services of an orangutan to get the laughs going.
The franchise is based on the notion that audiences have an abiding interest in watching Dharmendra and his sons Sunny and Bobby Deol in the same frame. Purely in terms of plot, Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se is not as convoluted as the other films. Puran (Sunny Deol) is a small-time Baba Ramdev-type Ayurvedic revolutionary who cures his patients with a wonder drug that has been passed on through the ages.
Puran Singh (Sunny) is an Ayurveda practitioner whose 'Vajra Kavach' formula is an effective remedy for everything from infertility to impotency, from a regular cold to severe colitis. Every big Pharma company wants to match the potency of Puran's medicines.
A family that laughs together stays together. Only it's hard to connect with the Deols' idea of humour as yet another outing in the Yamla Pagla Deewana franchise arrives. If there's a set of people that the third film would get a thumbs up from, it's the one employed in Ministry of AYUSH and the ayurveda die-hards.
An upright Ayurveda practitioner is hounded by big pharma giants for his age-old formula called Vajra Kawach that cures everything from pimples to impotency. But how long can he keep this magic pill only for the poor?
