Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi is directed by Aman Sachdeva and jointly produced by Ekta Kapoor and Bejoy Nambiar. It is set in Delhi and the story line focuses on friendship.

With a mouthful of a title, suggestive posters and curiosity around the meaning of the Delhi lingo jhand, the film turns out to be just a simple tale of friendship. At the outset itself, the viewer has been taken for a ride. Buddies Kuku Mathur (Gupta) and Ronnie Gulati (Juneja, who lives his role well) may have spent many nights downing fruit beer on the sly, but when it is time to face the world, it is Ronnie who moves forward quickly. His family textile shop has a branch - a sari-blouse matching centre that has been opened specially for him. Now this is something that Kuku cannot digest.

Probably the best thing about Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi is one small scene when this quirky God-man (Bijendra Kala), who provides 'hot and fresh' blessings, tells Kuku that he just repackages people's lost faith in a new form and serves it back to his devotees. For Kuku, his moment of 'enlightenment', usually defined as coming of age, comes through strangest of signals - a flicker of the light during the voltage fluctuations.

Till a few monsoons ago, a majority of film-makers in Bollywood would be petrified of experimenting, scared to step out of the comfort zone. Out of the box concepts and quirky titles were considered 'risky propositions' or 'professional harakiri' and those taking the road less travelled were often scoffed, derided and ridiculed for taking risks. Not anymore! These days, leading production houses are churning out movies that defy the stereotype. Balancing mainstream films with A-listers with wacky/innovative subjects starring newcomers is the new fad. Balaji/ALT, a key player, has been dabbling with quirky plots since quite some time. Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi is a sweet film, that should be given a chance What\'s it about: Kuku (Siddharth Gupta) and Ronnie (Ashish Juneja) are best friends in a lively Delhi colony. Coming from different class of families and background, Kuku\'s family comes from the service class while Ronnie\'s grandfather gives him his own hosiery shop. Just when things seem to be going on track, a series of events lead Kuku into the depths of despair as his life takes a series of downhill turns. The film takes a lot of flavor from its setting, with the title referencing to the word \'Jhand\' which is commonly used up north.

Kuku Mathur and Ronnie Gulati are best buddies. In posh South Delhi, they would call each other "bro". In the Delhi these two inhabit, of small "clonies", hosiery shops and middling ambition, the term is bhai ( not to be mistaken for the Mumbai brand of goon). The motherless Kuku (Gupta) finishes school with low marks and a dim future; Ronnie vaults straight into the shop that his much better-off family sets up for him. This we gather in the first few minutes of the film. The rest of it is about Kuku (Gupta) trying to find a way out of the mess of his own creation, helped along by accidental bad blood between him and Ronnie (Juneja), and bad advice from his no-good uncle (Sial). A series of misadventures lead Kuku to full-fledged "jhand-dom" (jhand, to me is a faintly obscene-sounding word, but I'm assured it means being left with nothing).

Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi captures Delhi but not its soul. There\'s a lot of dramatic and comic potential in Punjabi Delhi and Bollywood has been using it to the hilt for a few years now. Band Baaja Baraat, Fukrey, Vicky Donor being just a few examples of how it needs to be done. Kuku Sharma Ki Jhand Ho Gayi, alas, is not one of those films. Both the name Kuku and jhand (a loose translation in English being \'taken for a ride\') are both intrinsic to Delhi. The setting is middle-class Punjabi Delhi and we get the look spot-on.

Story: Kuku and Ronnie are childhood chaddi-buddies. In their late teens, life takes a turn and they grow up and grow out of each other. But will their dosti be back after a short break? Review: Here's a dosti-yaari story packaged and dished out in pure Dilli dhaaba-style - with local tadka (no extra toppings). With a young, fresh star-cast - minus frills and fanfare. No mundas baring bronzed six-pack bods or gori mundis dancing to disco bhangra, 'Yo-Yo' style (Hadippa!). It's as simple as aloo paratha with lassi. Gettit? Meet Kuku Mathur (Siddharth) a naive, middle-class Delhi boy (a bin maa ka ladka) living with his strict father who has scholarly ambitions for him, but Kuku dreams of opening his own restaurant. Ronnie (Ashish), his dhai-baje-waala friend (desi 4 AM, eh!) is more easy-going and street-smart. Their only adolescent addiction is drinking fruit-beer in a sari ka godown. After 12th grade, Kuku lands a spot boy's job in a shady film unit after much struggle. Meanwhile, Ronnie gets so busy in his family 'blouse-piece' business that he snubs his buddy.
