Storyline
Virat Bakshi, an army captain, arrives in Mumbai with his battalion to spend his holidays with his parents and sisters. His parents compel him to get married. He sets out his quest and finds his bride Saiba. Later they both fall in love with each other. Meanwhile, Freddy Daruwala, a terrorist kingpin sets sleeper cells in Mumbai putting the country in danger. The method Virat opts to counter the terrorist mastermind from exploding the bombs forms the rest of the story.

Plot
Virat Bakshi (Akshay Kumar), an Indian Army captain along with his battalion, arrives in Mumbai to spend his holidays with his family and siblings. Virat is forced by his parents and younger sisters to meet Saiba (Sonakshi Sinha), who they choose for him to get married to. During that interaction, Virat realizes that Saiba is an old-fashioned girl. Wherein, actually Saiba was pretending forced by her parents to abide to the ceremony rituals. Saiba is a college-level boxer and a modern girl. Virat realises this and falls in love with her but Saiba does not abide. But eventually, they both fall in love with each other. Once Virat and his sub-inspector of police and mate Mukund (SUMEET RAGHAVAN) witnesses a bus explosion which they had travelled by. In no time, Virat captures the culprit who blew the bus into flames and discovers that the culprit is just an executer who is a sleeper cell who is hired to plant the bomb. To further investigations, Virat finds out that the actual terrorist mastermind behind this explosion is planning in the city a fleet of explosions in the days to come. Seeking help of his fellow army men and companion Mukund, Virat manages to take down the sleeper cells and saves the city from the blasts. Terrorist mastermind kingpin (Freddy Daruwala) discovers the involvement of Virat in the blasts failure which provokes him to target the families of the army men. Virat with the help of his combating skills tackles the situation with sheer brilliance. At last, the terrorist mastermind orders Virat to surrender before him threatening to trigger the bombs if he does not oblige to his orders. Virat decides to sacrifice his life to save his mother land. Will the terrorist leader kill him and will they be able to explode the bombs and destroy the city forms the rest of the story.

One Line Review: Failed experiment with high octane stunts and deliberately invoked humour. Positive Points: Adrenaline pumping action captured with stylish camera angles, good background music and melodious music tracks - the meal you get for the money you paid. Negative Points: Lump in the throat dialogue delivery style of Akshay Kumar, tested-and-failed humour hammered into the movie often giving you a feeling that you are watching a Priyadarshan movie. Plot: While on leave from duty, Captain Virat Bakshi (Akshay Kumar) arrives in Mumbai also to find a suitable bride Saiba (Sonakshi Sinha) for himself. In the meantime, Virat gets his routes crossing against the mastermind (Freddy Daruwala), a terrorist kingpin. Daruwala plants sleeper cells all over the country putting the nation is domestic danger. Virat who is in Mumbai, directs a team of 20-25 men to blow off a terrorist team that is already making rounds in the city to trigger the bombs. Stone faced Daruwala, the antagonist of the movie, directs Virat through phone threatening to blow up the city into flames. How Virat takes the challenge to protect the city from the enemies forms the rest of the story. Direction And Other Technical Aspects: With a promising director like A. R. Murugadoss who has directed hits like 'Ghajini', 'Thuppakki', '7am Arivu', it is most likely viewers won't afford to miss a cinema made by a promising director. Direction is good but when unwanted songs are drilling out of nowhere into the movie, you feel a little distracted and bored. Cinematography is top-notch. Natarajan Subramaniam who has showcased his work in critically acclaimed movies like last train to 'Mahakali', 'Black Friday', 'Paanch', 'Knock Out' and 'Raanjhanaa', his work reflected flawlessness and met perfection. The look and the visually stunning atmospheric settings give you all you want as far as the set-frames and visuals in the movie are concerned. Action sequences in the movie are adrenaline pumping captured with Ram Gopal Varma imitated camera angles and are worth the efforts instilled by the action director bringing something real unlike those literally impossible neck twisting sequences that we get to see in movies that calls action its spine. The scene where Virat wields a sharp shear on a suspect's finger is disturbing. Art direction and costumes need no special mention as it served what was needed in the movie. But efforts need to be credited. Visual effects are excellent and you get to see unbelievably amazing visuals at all intense moments especially during the action sequences and also need to mention about the bus exploding sequence which was a jerk in the spine. Top-notch is how I put it in one word. Performance: Akshay Kumar has given a good performance with humour being his selling point. Sonakshi Sinha has very little scope in this movie with only a few tickling comedy scenes to perform in the movie. Govinda though appeared in a cameo pulled off his part with perfection. Supporting actors and junior actors did their bit that was needed. SUMEET RAGHAVAN does a great work which helps build Akshay Kumar's value in the movie. Freddy Daruwala was apt and did his part quite well. Music: Music is just average. Pritam Chakraborty has given some peppy songs for this flick with two tracks can't help not mentioning which are sure-shot playlist numbers, "Shayarana" sung by Arijit Singh and "Tu Hi Toh Hai" sung by Kunal Ganjawala. Final Verdict: This flick is a must watch for Akshay Kumar fans and of course for those who love jaw dropping action, this one is a must-go. This holiday is surely enjoyable with good action and a thought provoking message at the end of the movie.

If you are looking for some dhamekadar time pass, HOLIDAY is a film for you. It's clear from the beginning that this is no serious cinema; just pure action, with some crazy dialogues delivered with deadpan charm by Akshay Kumar. The khiladi is clearly having the time of his life as he goes about eliminating the sleeper cells, the filth from the political system and saluting our war heroes. In fact, it is the last named peg that actually works for the film as it takes the movie to a totally different direction from the other mindless cinema we have seen of late.
With this film, Akshay Kumar reminds us again why he's fondly called Action Kumar. He jumps, he runs, he fights goons and does more with such ease that everything seems utterly believable. There are some action sequences, which, while taking your breath away, also make you smile for the coolness of it all. Like the one where a terrorist is escaping from the hospital and to his horror, he finds Akshay Kumar running alongside him. Or the one where Akshay is escaping from the terrace of a police inspector's house
Holiday is a superb film. A thriller that excites, sets the adrenalin running, is unrelenting in its pace, keeps you thinking, allows you to clap, and then even chuckle at a few points, this A.R. Murugadoss directed film explores a genre that had been left untouched for quite a while. Even for Akshay, who had been seen in quite a few back to back masala films (barring another superbly made Special 26), the film is an experiment in an out and out commercial set up which is all set to be a very good success at the box office.
Let me stick my neck out just this once to say Holiday is going to be a huge success. It has all the trappings of a superlative masala entertainer, plus athoughtprovoking message on the uneasy relationship between the army and civilians.
Tough guys don't sing and dance, do they? Hang on, Captain Virat Bakshi, the pugnacious protagonist of Holiday, isn't your average action hero. He is much more than just a man in military fatigues. Kick-boxer, sharpshooter, dancer, spy: he has the ability to become what he wills. But one thing he certainly isn't is a tinker. Half-measures definitely aren't his scene. He is an invincible superhero primed to put all invincible superheroes in the shade. In the city that never sleeps, he leaps before he thinks and pulls off acts of impossible derring-do, not a hair out of place.
Akshay Kumar's Holiday will keep you hooked. Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty is an out-and-out Akshay Kumar vehicle. He plays Jack Bauer, Sherlock Holmes, Spiderman and Jason Bourne all rolled into one. He decimates sleeper cells (a word you will hear very, very often in this film) with his bare hands and unravels their nefarious plans with a little help from a Rubik's cube.
'Holiday', the official remake of the monster Tamil hit 'Thuppaki', gives Akshay Kumar a chance to return to full combat mode. He plays a patriotic soldier willing to stretch a few rules in the line of duty, whether it is wielding sharp shears on a suspect's finger, or shooting bad guys point blank. Till he's going bang bang, he's all right; the moment he gets romancing and joshing, he slides. So does the film.
What's Good: The absorbing pace, the intelligent thinking of the proceedings, Akshay Kumar and mostly the gratuitous action sequences. What's Bad: Sonakshi Sinha and the film's romantic angle, a half baked plot that comes with no back story and doesn't invest enough in painting an elaborate picture of its characters. And mostly the overstretched, over-exaggerated and over the top sequences that probably helps in raising the fun quotient of the film doesn't really smell of wit.
Gagged men tumble out of his closet. Tied up terrorists and 'sleeper cells' too. Hell's bells, they're far from 'sleeping beauties'. But then they have to make our brave-heart Virat Bakshi (Akshay) look good. And he sure does. In his camouflage suits and his neon bermudas. Whether he's on a secret mission (as Defence Intelligence Agent), or romancing his boisterous 'boxer' belle Saiba (Sonakshi). All the while coaching his cop buddy on how to 'crack a case', or saluting his boss sergeant (Govinda, in a cutesy cameo)
Akshay Kumar returns to the silver screen after a hiatus. Known for having a film release every few months, this move has, expectedly, garnered positive reception by the film fraternity as well as the multitude of fans. In his newest outing HOLIDAY - A SOLDIER IS NEVER OFF DUTY, the actor teams up with A.R. Murugadoss, who made his Hindi debut with GHAJINI [2008], starring Aamir Khan. Incidentally, Murugadoss too returns to the Hindi film arena after a gap of almost six years.
