Jagga, a child orphaned at birth was growing up in a hospital. One day a man lands in the hospital with a broken leg. He is a key witness to the Purulia arms drop case. Introducing himself to Jagga as Tooty footy, he adopts him and takes him to his place. However, within a few days, he gets Jagga admitted into a boarding school and disappears mysteriously, leaving Jagga alone again. Jagga grows up in the boarding. Unsolved mysteries intrigued him and he started helping the local police inspector in solving cases.

Sing along musicals are a Hollywood forte. Hindi films may have their share of singing and dancing, but to have a full blown musical with very little spoken dialogue, is a unique and rare proposition. Anurag Basu's Jagga Jasoos is a certified Disney powered children's musical film. Sadly, it's not as polished as usual Disney products. Full marks to the filmmaker for trying, but this whimsical adventure story panning across continents is not exactly as good as it could have been.

Guns fall off the sky, giraffes skirt its ambitious frames and indigenous tribes of North East India and Africa season the scenes with flavours of whimsical diversity. Verse and action spurt out by the second in the wildly alive and mobile phones-free universe of Anurag Basu's Jagga Jasoos. Dispensing with the notions of realism, Basu sets up a frothy space around his adventure fantasy that revels in its lavish imagination, meddlesome inquiries and delicious Bongness, never once pausing to catch a breath or make sense. The musical format works delightfully for the brand of quirk Basu means to convey.

When Jagga Jasoos opens, we see Shruti (Katrina Kaif) narrating the adventures of Jagga Jasoos (Ranbir Kapoor), a la Tintin, to a group of children. She tells us about Jagga's (Ranbir Kapoor) childhood, spent in Maynaguri in West Bengal and how he was abandoned in a hospital at birth. Jagga grows up in the hospital, a quiet and lovable child who doesn't speak much because of a stammer.

A breezy, audaciously jaunty ride through the misadventures of a stuttering, bumbling boy-detective in search of his missing foster father, Jagga Jasoos has memorable madcap moments stemming principally from its free-flowing mix of music, dance, situational and slapstick comedy and wildly improbable action. Even if this film might feel like an epic misfire at times, Anurag Basu's deliciously zany, ambitious adventure drama, when it is on song, has an oddly bewitching quality.

Meet intrepid boy detective Jagga. And bumbling girl reporter Shruti. These two go sleuthing through a series of picturesque spots, when not breaking into song, dodging bad guys hot on their trail, and averting the third world war. Okay, I made the last one up. But in the near-three hours of the run time of Jagga Jasoos, there's everything else, with Ranbir and Katrina chasing bent spies, arms dealers, and sundry other smaller fry, while, of course, saving the world.

I spy with my little eye an experiment that works for the most part. For a film industry that adheres to certain rules of using music, Jagga Jasoos is an undeniable experiment. The screenplay is structured as chapters from a comic book; the movie uses a classroom full of kids and their teacher, Shruti (Katrina) as its main storytelling device. The films unfolds as she narrates stories from the book, and we're pulled into Jagga's (Ranbir) world of makeshift houses, merry characters and rhyming dialogue.

Anurag Basu has a trustworthy lieutenant in cinematographer Ravi Varman. His camera entices you to enter the world of Jagga and once you're there, Basu ensures your stay for a longer period. Jagga Jasoos is poster perfect, beautiful and soothing. It all begins in Darjeeling where a deduction expert man-child Jagga (Ranbir Kapoor) lives in a school hostel and applies his theories on friends. It's a terrific opening as you get to know about his ideas, loneliness and ever wandering mind.

All these years, one wondered why there was this big delay in Jagga Jasoos, but finally, the answer is here. After Barfi, which released in 2012, director Anurag Basu brings you an entertaining film which will take you to the fantasy world. One of its own kinds of mystery where comedy meets thriller, Jagga Jasoos emerges a winner in all aspects. Jagga (Ranbir Kapoor), an orphan, ends up rescuing an injured man, Badal Bagchi aka Tutti Futti (Saswata Chatterjee).
