Jazz -- because Jaswinder Singh is uncool -- (Saif Ali Khan) is a 40-something slacker living in London who pretends to be a property broker but in reality, is a 24-hour party animal and a bit of a sex addict as well. He feels he has never grown up, preferring to date younger and younger women each day, hasn't invested in a single meaningful relationship in his life and thinks wife and kids are for losers.

While admiring Saif Ali Khan in my review of Baazaar I wrote, 'I see a self-possessed actor whose progressing potential overshadows the conventional barometer of stardom. Too bad this realisation has to happen during an utterly ordinary, unoriginal movie like Baazaar.'

Bollywood has aged and so has its perennial leading men. However, only some of them have become wiser. Saif Ali Khan is one of them. The actor's coming-of-age can be traced by the journey of his characters. In Jawaani Jaaneman, he again played the quintessential commitment-phobic playboy on screen, a character he has trademarked. But, the only difference here is that his 'age' is coming in the way of him staying aloof.

A breezy love story with an unabashedly cockeyed twist that gives it a topsy-turvy rhythm, Jawaani Jaaneman, directed by Nitin Kakkar (Filmistaan), puts a vigorous spin on the father-daughter relationship drama and guides it into a space where many surprises lurk. A few elements in the film might appear a touch affected, but the screenplay keeps the proceedings mostly light and unassuming.

An uber-cool, carefree Jazz aka Jassi (Saif Ali Khan) is a real estate broker in London who's all set to crack the biggest deal of his life. He's a party animal who loves his freedom but is also crossing the age of 40. He meets a girl, Tia (Alaya F) in the club, brings her home, tries to get steamy with her until she drops the "you might be my father" bomb on him.

When the first time I heard about Jawaani Jaaneman, I thought this would be a love story of an ageing man and a young girl, and a lady of his age would be the third bead in the rosary. But the trailer was the big surprise. This isn't a love triangle, this is the tale of a father who's unaware of his daughter and a mother who has been lost in her own world ever since the couple had Sambhog, as they say in the film.

It's good to see actors being their age on screen, rather, as in Jawaani Jaaneman, playing characters who don't want to be their true age. Which is what Jazz is all about, played with characteristic aplomb, swag and a casual, throwaway sense of humour by Saif Ali Khan.

Jazz aka Jasvinder Singh is living it up in London town, alternating between being a near-broke broker and a cool swinger making moves on hot babes. He is single, and man, does he mingle. And then one fine evening, as he tries his trusty pick-up lines on a girl young enough to be his daughter, he learns that he is, in fact, a dad. Whoopsie.

There was a certain joy that I took in Saif Ali Khan's refusal to conform these last few years. While his contemporaries played by-the-book, here was an actor who was being chased around Mumbai's roads dressed in faux fur and Gwen Stefani's 'hair clumps' in Kaalakandi or ready to throw the cop trope under the bus with Sacred Games' Sartaj Singh. The experiments, alas, largely came at the cost of success.

With a rom-com repertoire that stretches across decades, Saif Ali Khan embodies the Peter Pan who never grew up. And now once again, the specious Indian rom-com hero returns in Jawaani Jaaneman, much to the delight of those who have watched him charm his way through movies like Dil Chahta Hai, Hum Tum, Salaam Namaste, Kal Ho Na Ho, Love Aaj Kal amongst many others.

An ultra cool Jazz urf Jassi (Saif Ali Khan) is enjoying his freedom tune 24x7. The real estate broker in London is a party animal and is least bothered that he has crossed 40. One day during his routine escapades at his friend Rocky (Chunky Pandey) pub, he meets a sweet Tia (Alaya F) who is half his age. He brings her home but the girl drops a missile that shatters his freedom, destroys Jazz's 'boyhood' shell and reminds him of his past Ananya ( Tabu) that is 'bigger' than his future.

The girl with a wide smile and endless enthusiasm reveals there is a 33.33 percent chance he is her estranged father. Director Nitin Kakkar's love story follows all the beats of a basic romantic comedy, except that the love is paternal. Although crediting Argentinian feature Igaulita A Mi, writers Hussain Dalal and Abbas Dalal mash up other films from the genre. Among them, Mama Mia, where a Bohemian mother (Meryl Streep, replaced by Tabu) reveals any one of three men could be her daughter's father.

Casting is everything in Jawaani Jaaneman, an official remake of the Argentinean comedy Igualita A Mi (2010). Who else but Saif Ali Khan to play a fading Lothario who proclaims that monogamy and family are sure signs of death but secretly dyes his hair and needs reading glasses?

A 40-something single man, high on life, finds out that he has a 21-year-old daughter. Not just that she is also pregnant. Will he rise up to the occasion or continue to live his free-spirited life in denial?
