If you want to fully understand the struggles of newcomers without powerful godparents in the Hindi film industry, watch dear Yami Gautam from Vicky Donor (2012) and the very likeable Pulkit Samrat from Fukrey (2013) brave their way through Sanam Re. It is a cringe-worthy film with cringe-worthy pretensions to gravitas and grandeur, amateurish writing and the most ludicrous choreography ever seen in mainstream Bollywood.
It's one thing to indulge a restless tyke who's wrecked the bedroom walls with a box of crayons and regard his mess as masterpiece. But to witness an adult with zero flair for filmmaking land opportunities while genuine talent struggles to see the light of the day is as frustrating as it is mind-boggling. Sanam Re, director Divya Khosla Kumar's moronic second film, produced by T-Series boss and better half, Bhushan Kumar is packaged like a postcard romance high on sweeping ballads and snow laden vistas.
An ambitious Himachali boy Akash (Pulkit Samrat) is lured to Mumbai by his dreams. He leaves his family, picturesque hometown Tanakpur (Shimla) and childhood sweetheart Shruti (Yami Gautam) for the same. Years later, he bumps into her in Canada and time stands still, but destiny has other plans.
Aakash (Pulkit Samrat) is an ambitious young man who's always rebuked by his boss. The circumstances take him back to his small home town amidst snowcapped hills. His dadaji (Rishi Kapoor), a photographer had been a strong influence on him during childhood but now he's old and Aakash's parents want to sell off the photo studio since there's no one to take care of it. The young confused man rediscovers the memories of his childhood love Shruti (Yami Gautam) whom he had dumped for a comfortable city life a few years ago.
Actress-turned-filmmaker Divya Kumar Khosla, the wife of T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar, had made her debut as a director with the yuppie love story Yaariyan and though the film made a decent impact at the box-office, the same cannot be predicted for Divya's next venture Sanam Re. Starring Pulkit Samrat, Yami Gautam and Urvashi Rautela, Sanam Re revolves around the love story of Akash (Samrat) and Shruti (Yami). When Akash leaves his ladylove in the lurch in order to follow his ambitions, little does he know that professional or financial success is not enough to fill up the loneliness in his heart.
Even though, expectations were never high from this second directorial venture of Divya Khosla Kumar, but the melodious musical score along with the much hyped Pulkit-Yami's alleged 'real-life' love affair made us hopeful for a decent love story if not an extraordinary one. But the film shatters that little ray of hope into small pieces as it turns out to be an over-the-top melodramatic love affair. The major drawback of the film is its amateurishly written script that is so predictable that even a 10 year old would tell the next sequence.
You think the title Sanam Re has an incomplete ring to it? Wait until you watch the film. The befuddling, undercooked storyline is sure to leave most viewers wondering where it actually begins and where it ends. Sanam Re is a juvenile jumble that is undecipherable. Given the way the film rambles aimlessly and gets all tangled up by the time it gets to the halfway mark, it would be pointless seeking pointers from the scriptwriter (Sanjeev Datta). He himself probably has no clue.
Aakash hails from Tanakpur, a small town that has now been abandoned by most youngsters in search of their future. In a bustling city like Mumbai, Aakash is struggling with his job and an irritating boss. Back home, his Daadu (Rishi Kapoor) is now suffering from Alzheimers. Once a famous photographer in town, Daadu is now too old to run his shop and hence Aakash is called upon by his parents for the final settlement of the property.
Akash (Pulkit Samrat) is a stressed out corporate executive working in Mumbai under a bad bass (a hammy Manoj Joshi). When he gets a call from his mother about the sale of his family photo shop that used to be run by his grandfather (Rishi Kapoor...who definitely got a fat paycheck here!), he leaves everything and goes to meet her.
Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in: With a dialogue from Godfather 3, of all things! Before you ask us what has a Godfather dialogue got to do with Sanam Re, here's the answer. Bollywood still makes films based on concepts borrowed from the early '90s when we expect them to come up with something more 2016. Also, there are many scenes in Sanam Re that seem as forced as this Michael Corleone dialogue in this review.
Doubt is rather unfairly maligned; It may be true that it has killed more dreams than failure ever will, but sometimes, a tactfully timed doubt can be used to end an embarrassingly bad dream before it gets out of hand. Let's take Divya Khosla Kumar's second directorial feature, Sanam Re, as an example. If the director or the producers - T-Series' Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar - had listened to any doubts they may have had during the making of this film, we might have been spared yet another ill-conceived love story.
