When the promos of this remake first came out, it felt like the makers have killed the spirit of BR Chopra's original Pati Patni Aur Woh (1978) and cheapened it to the level of a crude sex comedy. That film, starring Sanjeev Kumar, Vidya Sinha and Ranjeeta was way ahead of its time.
Remakes can be a tricky business as comparisons are bound to happen with the original content. Here's one right at the beginning: I had one problem when I recently watched the original Pati Patni Aur Woh (starring Sanjeev Kumar, Ranjeeta and Vidya Sinha). The writers and the director gave us naive women who will believe every word a man says, even agreeing to continue with a relationship despite knowing that the man cheated.
In 1978, BR Chopra made a film about extra-marital relationships titled Pati Patni Aur Woh. It had a traditional housewife in the form of Vidya Sinha, a modern secretary in the form of Ranjeeta, and a charming and suave husband in the form of Sanjeev Kumar. Over four decades later, Mudassar Aziz attempts to tell the same story but giving it his own touches and twists.
First thing first. The makers have changed the word 'balatkari' with 'bada sanskari' in the long dialogue about the plight of husbands. Who says public outrage doesn't bother Bollywood filmmakers! That doesn't mean director Mudassar Aziz's Pati, Patni Aur Woh is without misplaced priorities and wrong validating sermons. But all this is so funny, intentionally, that you'd be reeling with laughter.
Alright, we are back in Kanpur/Lucknow/replace with any major city of Uttar Pradesh to endure yet another bumpy rom-com ride where Kartik Aaryan dresses up as Surinder Sahni sans the grace or ardour for his significant other like everybody's favourite employee at Punjab Power.
PATI PATNI AUR WOH is the story of the adventures of a cheating husband. Abhinav aka Chintu Tyagi (Kartik Aaryan) tops in his exams and secures a comfortable job in the PWD department in his hometown Kanpur. His parents (K K Raina and Navni Parihar) compel him to go for arranged marriage. He meets Vedika Tripathi (Bhumi Pednekar) for this reason. Sparks fly and they both get married.
The story jumps between two cities of Lucknow & Kanpur from which we've lead from Vedika (Bhumi Pednekar) and Abhinav aka Chintu Tyagi (Kartik Aaryan). They both get hitched through an arranged marriage, in which Chintu is a confused husband who is scattered despite having his sh*t together. Vedika, on the other hand, is unfiltered and we see their journey from 'just married' to 'rust married' through one song.
Remakes, adaptations is a tricky business, especially if you touch classics like PATI PATNI AUR WOH, an extra care is a must as the soul of the original needs to be protected. Thankfully writer-director Mudassar Aziz brings in the fresh charm and wit in this out rightly funny & winningly emotional adaptation of B.R. Chopra's classic comedy that is cheerfully in sync with today's time and the movie's theme.
Infidelity, and the web of lies around it, spun with the help of a trusted buddy, has the same flavour in 1978 as it does when remade in 2019. Notably, the differences in writer-director Mudassar Aziz's modernised version of BR Chopra's original give the women some agency, and don't paint the Pati (husband) in an entirely heroic light.
Men will be men, so lump it, ladies - that was the message of the adultery-themed comedy Pati Patni Aur Woh, a remake of the 1973 movie of the same name that follows the misadventures of a file-pusher who ignores his beautiful wife and falls for his secretary.
One Word Review... Pati Patni Aur Woh: WINNER. Thoroughly entertaining contemporary adaptation of BR Chopra's classic... Well penned, well executed, well enacted [Kartik Aaryan, Bhumi, Ananya, Aparshakti, all in terrific form]... Recommended!
What do you picture when you hear the words, Pati Patni Aur Woh? A privileged husband, a helpless wife and a modern damsel. The new Mudassar Aziz film is everything but not what BR Chopra showed us in 1978 film of the same name. Starring Kartik Aaryan, Ananya Panday and Bhumi Pednekar, Pati Patni Aur Woh is a modern take on the age-old concept of infidelity.
The film, a modern take on the cult comedy-drama by the same name (1978), follows the escapades of a married man, who falls for another woman, and the chaos that ensues.
