UDAAN is a social film based on father-son relationship. The actors are not big stars of film industry, yet they have performed like stars. The story of the film is such: Rohan studies in a boarding school in Shimla and aspires to be a poet. One day he secretly goes with his friends in a theatre to watch porn film. His school administration comes to know this and eventually he is kicked out of his boarding school. Thereafter he returns back to his hometown Jamshedpur, which was earlier in Bihar but after the division of Bihar now it comes in Jharkhand where Tata steel city is famous worldwide. Opposite to his expectations his father Bhairav (Ronit Roy) doesn't greet his son warmly despite the fact that his son was returning back his home after 8 years. Rohit's father is a very strict and disciplined person. Rohan also comes to know that he had a step brother named Arjun. Rohit's father Bhairav had lost his wife some years back and he didn't want to take the responsibility of bringing up the child so he had sent his son Rohit to boarding school. Rohit used to lead a free life in his boarding school but at home he feels caged. He is not allowed to do what he wants to do. He wants to be a writer, a poet but his father says that his poetry wouldn't feed him and his family. Hence he forces him to study engineering. His father also compels him to work in his steel factory. Rohit is not even a bit interested in studying engineering and working in his father's steel factory. (Jamshedpur is famous for steel plants hence the writer has chosen the right business of Rohit's father). Rohan's father is so strict that he doesn't want his son to answer him back or to ever look into his eyes. Vikramaditya Motwane has made a thought provoking movie and but most of the credit goes to its writer Anurag Kashyap who has also produced the film. Though it is a serious film it tells what happens in our society. Many children run away from their houses or commit suicide due to the strictness they face at home. This film is based upon the relationship between father and son. It can be said that this film also exposes the effect of generation gap. Nowadays most children do not listen to their parents and on the other hand, most parents are not nice to their children. Though the film is good in many aspects, it has some weak points. Neither the father nor the son has been portrayed as fully positive characters. A father should be strict, but not to that extent which is shown in this film. A father should behave in friendly manner then only the son would respect, love and listen to him otherwise children are likely to turn rebels if they are treated very strictly. You may not have sympathy with the son Rohit because he is not a good child. From the beginning onwards you see Rohit stealing money from his father's purse; he even looks angrily into his father's eyes which is bad on his part. No father will like it. Surprisingly, his father doesn't notice all this. Rohit has a uncle Ram Kapoor who understands his problem but can't help him as much as is required due to Bhairav's strict behaviour. Rajat Barmecha is a powerhouse actor and if he continues doing his job in this manner with sincerity and discipline he would surely become a star some day. He shows no symptoms of panic in his performance which is factually perfect. Ronit Roy has given one of the best performances till date. No one knows why he is just limited to small screen. Industry needs such actors to do roles of elder brother or father, which only legend actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Nana Pateker etc used to do. In this role Ronit Roy brings freshness. Ram Kapoor is little less than Ronit Roy but he is still good. He too has done his part well. Ayaan Boaradia has done excellent job as Arjun. He can be called as the show stealer. Arjun's expression will enter into your mind and be there for sometime after you go out of the theatre. Anurag Kahsyap earlier has directed some meaningful films like BLAK FRIDAY, NO SMOKING, DEV D etc. Though those films were not successful business wise, they caught industry and media's attention. His films denoted some problems prevalent the society. This time Anurag did not direct himself but gave the chance to another director Vikramditya Motwane which is great on Anurag's part. The script is okay with some flaws but the direction is good. Even dialogues suit very much. Dialogues are of north India which will be liked by all North Indians. Though this film is made with good intension and for teenagers, it lacks commercial value. Hence there are less chances of this film to do good business. However, it should be watched once by all. Teenagers would surely like this film and may give good business to the film. But since it lacks romance, you can't say what would be the fate of the film. Go for it once.
