Before the review, a quick explanation about Brahmarakshas. They are supposed to be priests who were trusted with great knowledge but misused it for personal gain and in harming others. So their souls were cursed by Brahma to eternal damnation. In Vikram Bhatt's version, the Brhamarakshas is a cross between a small dinosaur and a leftover Mummy from Mummy Returns. It also bellowed like a lion crossed with a buffalo. Also, it isn't scary. That being its biggest fault. One must say that the 3D rendering is good, given our budgets. But remember the lab scene in the first Jurassic Park, where this small dinosaur comes and scares the shit out of you - that hasn't been achieved. The point of a horror film is that it should scare you, it should repulse you. None of that happens in the film.

The title role is played by a green-eyed monster with a lizard like figure and it seems pretty confused about its personality. Sometimes, it moves at an alarming speed when it has to attack random non-starry people, but when the lead characters happen to be around, it adapts a slow-motion approach, giving enough time for somebody or the other to save them in the nick of time. Sometimes, it barges through the door better than Daya of CID fame, but when Bipasha Basu (playing the bull-headed tragedy queen, Ahana) is inside a room she can keep the deadly beast away by just banging the door on it.

The big fat wicked monster in Creature 3D does have good taste. He attacks our very lovely Bipasha Basu. Nudging us into a rude awakening to a time when monsters, ghouls and other evil forces in Hindi horror films chased the likes of Huma Khan and Asha Sachdev. Yup, a raga of refinement runs in the new-age terror flicks specially those directed by Vikram Bhatt. He sure knows his monster primer. More than the fear component, which is ample here, what I appreciated in Creature 3D was its honest intentions.

Now this is one of those rare films that has VFX leading the show from first till the last frame. In that perspective, Creature gets it perfectly right. Though filmmaker Vikram Bhatt has been using technology to his advantage for quite some time now, especially with 3D coming into play, Creature is by far his best effort (and result) in terms of presenting the supernatural element, in this case a 'creature', so very well on the big screen. Just for this reason, Vikram deserves a compliment though one has to admit that as a story-teller he has done better in the past. But then more about it later.

Ahana Dutt (Bipasha Basu) comes with the traumatic past of her father's death. She begins life from the scratch at a small hill station in Himachal Pradesh where she builds her own forest lodge. After a grand opening, the place is struck a calamity with a sudden string of deaths around it. It seems like a wild animal attack but the rampant speed at which the killings occur, it is the doing of some animal really powerful. After one of such unfortunate incidents, a survivor describes the animal as a 10 feet tall monster. A professor in Mumbai understands the animal as a Brahmrakhshas killing whom is next to impossible.

After watching Creature 3D you will not remain a homo sapiens but will change into a new creature. Let's understand through a story why this will happen. A woman named Ahana, trying her best to look like a girl, has come to Himachal from Mumbai. She has opened a boutique hotel. The hotel is supposed to open on Christmas. Th truck from Chandigarh carrying supplies for the hotel party breaks down in a jungle and gets attacked by a lizard-man. In the second half, a professor reveals that the lizard-man is a 'Brahma rakshas' while in the first half this creature attacks people one by one. Meanwhile, Ahana falls in love with a man who plays guitar. To give us a break from all the attacks by the lizard-man, our hero Kunal also sings song while Bipasha reminds us of her days from Raaz as she kisses him.

The forests of Himachal Pradesh are not only about their scenic beauty as they are also supposed to take you back to your roots. And, I am not talking about any ordinary roots here. But, before dissecting a movie, which delivers what it promised in the promos, with our logical lenses, we need to take a small crash course in Hindu mythology. The 3D in the title is positioned such that it draws your eye immediately, and you know why as soon as the film begins. The Creature, a scaly, long-tailed lizard-type with a semi-human face and green eyes and a loud growl, swishes its tail in your face, just where your 3D dark glasses end: first generation viewers of creature-cum-horror flicks may well flinch.
