Sad! Newton is out of the 90th Academy Awards’ race!
Rajkummar Rao’s ‘Newton’ is sadly out of Oscar’s 2018 race. Read full story.
Rajkummar Rao’s critically acclaimed film ‘Newton’, which was India’s official entry to the 2018’s Oscars, is now out of the race. The film, which is directed by Amit Masurkar and stars Rao and Pankaj Tripathi, was India’s official submission in Best Foreign Language Film category, but now, when the Academy has revealed its final list, we can’t see our Indian film. According to ‘The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’, a total of ninety two films were considered for this category and the final nine films that made it to the final list are: ‘A Fantastic Woman’ (Chile), ‘In the Fade’ (Germany), ‘On Body and Soul’ (Hungary), ‘Foxtrot’ (Israel), ‘The Insult’ (Lebanon), ‘Loveless’ (Russia), ‘Felicite’ (Senegal), ‘The Wound’ (South Africa) and ‘The Square’ (Sweden).
The last Indian film that officially went to the Oscars was, Ashutosh Gowariker's ‘Lagaan’ in 2001. So far, only 3 Indian movies have gone to the Oscars and apart than ‘Lagaan’, the other two films are, ‘Salaam Bombay’ (1989) and ‘Mother India’ (1958). Though it’s sad news for the entire industry, we thank Newton’s makers for producing such an impactful and content-driven film in this masala movie-loving generation.
