One line Review: Exceptional performance by the leads, strong plot and execution of the concept. Positive Points: The revenge tale witnesses startling performances by Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Varun Dhawan, Sriram Raghavan's commendable direction, the film creates a distressing void due to the revenge drama and has an involving plot. The unpredictable climax leaves you enthralled. Negative Points: The second half of the movie loses its grip and seems dull at a few frames. Some unnecessary sequences dragged to length. Plot: The happy life of a common man Raghu (Varun Dhawan) is completely shattered when his beloved wife Misthi (Yami Gautam) and son Robin are murdered viciously in a bank robbery case. Raghu is completely lost being in a state of utter shock does not really accept the reality and keeps burning in the fire of revenge. One of the robbers is Laik (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) who is the actual murderer is caught by the police while other one escapes tactfully. Raghu tries with all his wit and valour to find the other robber as according to Laik, his other partner Harman is the culprit. Laik is incarcerated for 20 years but is released in 15 years due to medical reasons. Meanwhile Raghu does all he can to find Laik's partner, the course of which also includes sleeping with Laik's prostitute girlfriend Jhumli (Huma Qureshi). The dark drama is filled with unpredictable twists and keeps the audiences hooked throughout the film. Direction and other Technical Aspects: Director Sriram Raghavan has done an appreciable task with the direction and execution of the storyline. The film skilfully depicts many shades of grey and gives you some goose bum moments. The plot is strong and the cinematography is fantastically done. The dry moments in the second half are alarming though can be hidden under the shadow of remarkable implementation. Performances: This revenge tale is completely performance driven. The spectacular performance by the villainous hero Raghu played by Varun Dhawan is worth all the praise. Doing a film completely out of league and proving to be incredible at it is a tough job which Varun managed to do. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a gem and makes his character look so naturally real that you are disgusted by him and ponder if there can be such people alive! He does complete justice as an antagonist and is superb in every frame. Yami Gautam, Huma Qureshi and Radhika Apte also play their part well strengthening the plot with their supporting roles. Music: The dark tale does not come with a lot of songs in the film. But the song Jee karda which was already a popular one, shown at the end with the credits makes its presence felt. Final Verdict: Watch the film if you enjoy stories with unpredictable twists and for the spectacular performances. The emotionally absorbing drama will leave you in soreness if you are not the revenge sort. But for the commendable direction, plot and execution it can be a onetime watch.

Director Sriram Raghavan strikes the hammer of genius with BADLAPUR for he buys your eyes and makes you stay glued to the screen right till the end. The biggest highlight of the film is the incredible tussle between two powerful actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Varun Dhawan unexpectedly conjoined by the quirky screenplay-labyrinth. The makers have aptly labeled this film as a 'Twisted Entertainer'. Yes, the film is dark, gory and violent, but, at the same time, it's also cerebrally stimulating and entertaining. The artistic values are top notch but it's meant for a select audience that patronizes sensible, sensitive, meaningful cinema.
Let the right one sin. Right, of course, depends entirely on where we're standing. Is this character in the right, or is he merely stage-right? Or should we be standing here instead, where we can see what he's holding behind his back, an anniversary present or a bloodied knife?
How cold does it have to be for revenge to be served sizzling hot? 'Badlapur', Sriram Raghavan's latest, is a mixed bag of a movie: it has a cracking set-up, a middle with the occasional unsettling prod, and an end which fizzles. A bank heist goes horrifyingly wrong, resulting in the death of innocents. One robber gets away, the other (Nawazudin Siddiqui) is caught and incarcerated. And the young man (Varun Dhawan) whose cosy, comfortable life is overturned by the incident, vows 'badla'.
Average Bollywood revenge dramas thrive on predictability. They rarely, if ever, tamper with the bad guy-good guy construct. Badlapur is an exception. Sriram Raghavan's neo-noir crime thriller is about vengeance and forgiveness all right, but one thing that the film isn't is conventional. Not everything that Badlapur comes up with clicks into place without a problem. There are several elements in it hat stick out of the frame rather awkwardly. But overall the film packs quite a punch.
The axe forgets; the tree remembers. Director Sriram Raghavan's Badlapur starts off with this African proverb, clearly setting the tone of the film to be a revenge saga. The film has Raghavan's class written all over it, just like his previous flick Agent Vinod, but this time around the filmmaker strikes the right chord unlike Saif Ali Khan-Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer. Varun Dhawan's transformation from a boy next door to a head smashing murderer, has been the film's selling point and the actor did show promise with hard hitting promos of Badlapur.
Raghu's (Varun Dhawan) indefectible life is devastated, when a robbery episode kills his wife and son. The culprit Liak (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) refuses to let out the truth and is imprisoned for 20 years. Refusing to move on, Raghu harbours in him the tryst for truth. Can he avenge the deaths of people who meant the world to him? And, is being devoured by the feeling of revenge as gratifying as his volcanic rage had promised?
'Badlapur' is definitely not the stuff for those with a weak appetite or those who like things black or white. Director Sriram Raghavan consistently treads that thin line between the right and wrong in this complex revenge drama, which keeps us riveted but also mighty unsettled.
Badlapur is a complete performance driven film. It is one of the best neo-noir representation in Indian cinema. The film has the right amount of gore and will leave its bitter taste on your tongues.
